Butterfree

Butterfree, The Butterfly Pokémon. In Battle, it flaps it's wings at high speed to release toxic dust into the air. It's wings, covered in poisonous powders, repel water. This lets it fly in the rain. It connects Honey every day. It rubs it onto it's hair legs and takes it back to the next. It flies from flower to flower collecting honey. It can see distant flowers that bloom. It can sense flowers blooming up to 6 miles from it's nest.

Battle Moveset

A Good Moveset for Butterfree would have to be this:

Attacks:

Sunny Day
Solarbeam
Psychic
Hidden Power Fire

Items Attached:

Salac Berry

Preferred Nature:

Timid

Strategy Using Butterfree

Butterfree's best stats lie in the special area, which are just below average. Butterfree can work well as a special sweeper, just don't expect it to last long against Physical sweepers.
You're probably wondering why I'm not making this moveset suite Butterfree's compound eyes ability. The answer is simple: Why use a moveset that is predictable and counterable? I mean, if you want to use Sleep powder/Stun spore, its your choice, you'll just be at a disadvantage.
This moveset works very much like most Sunnybeamers, it may not be as strong as the best out there, but it covers quite a bit of weaknesses. It also covers any Steel types that maybe thrown against you.
Yes, its a risk to use Sunny Day on such a defenseless little creature but there maybe times when to do so, but a little risk is fun. Look for a time your opponent may switch for a type advantage, if you take note of the pokemon he's using and the moves its used previously, you should be able to predict if he's going to switch or not.
Use the Salac Berry to give that boost to Butterfree's speed when its HP is low. EV's will also give a boost to speed, and a boost to special attack too.
Another possibility for a Butterfree moveset is: Toxic, Whirlwind, Substitute, Giga drain, which requires some set up before use though(namely, Baton pass as much defense as possible to Butterfree. Toxic and whirlwind away, and use Substitute if you need to recover some time and Giga drain to restore any HP lost.
Butterfree as a pokemon has a diverse movepool(even if its small, Compound eyes allows it use Sleep powder and Stun spore effectively, but alas, thats become tiresome and predictable). Shame Butterfree doesn't gain anything from STAB.
Otherwise, Butterfree is a cool pokemon, lots of potential here, but it doesn't have the best stats and would probably be best replaced with a much more powerful Special sweeper or Sunnybeamer.

EV Corner:

Max out the EVs in Speed & Special Attack for Butterfree with any remaining in Special Defense

Strategy Against Butterfree

Butterfree's Physical Defense is weaker than it's Special so either go with Super effective like Fire and Ice or Phyiscal attacks and it'll be down in no time

Contest Moveset

A good Contest Moveset for Butterfree would have to be this for the Smart Contest best with Calm, Gentle, Careful, Sassy Nature:

Attacks:

Sleep Powder
Stun Spore
Shadow Ball
Whirlwind

Items Attached:

Green Scarf

Strategy Using Butterfree

If you do the attacks in this following order you should have very few problems; 1st - Sleep powder, 2nd - Stun spore, 3rd - Whirlwind, 4th - Shadow ball, 5th - Sleep Powder

Animé Appearences

Butterfree has had many Animé Appearences although most were cameos. First, Ash's Metapod evolved into one after a battle and became one of Ash's strongest Pokémon, helping him in battle. He traded it fora Raticate once but traded it back. Soon after, he released it and let it start a family. After that, Richie used one called Happy
