Bewear, The Strong Arm Pokémon. This immensely dangerous Pokémon possesses overwhelming physical strength. Its habitat is generally off-limits. This Pokémon has the habit of hugging its companions. Many Trainers have left this world after their spines were squashed by its hug.
Overview
Welcome to the latest installment in our ongoing saga that is the Pokémon of the Week. This week we'll be taking a closer look at the creepy Build-A-Bear attempt that is our friend Bewear. I apologize if you're reading this and you happen to really like Bewear's design, but between the design and its dex description it just really creeps me out. Despite awkward appearances though it can be pretty useful if you're in a jam. Bewear is a great bulky offensive tank with a solid 120/125/80 HP, Atk, and Def respectively and a unique ability that halves the damage you would normally take from moves that make direct contact. Plus it has a great movepool on top of that. However It's a Normal/Fighting Type 'mon though, so it's weak to some very common type matchups like Fairy, Psychic, other Fighting types, and with its ability Fluff it has an added Fire weakness as well..so think very carefully before sending it into battle and make sure you have a good squad to back it up.
Positives
+ Unique ability that halves the damage you would otherwise take from moves that make direct contact
+ Solid bulk to compliment its ability with a Base 120/80 HP and Def respectively
+ Great attacking potential as well with a Base 125 Atk
+ Very diverse movepool with access to Ice Punch, Thunder Punch, Shadow Claw, Superpower, Earthquake, and Payback
Negatives
- It's weak to a lot of common type matchups like Fairy, Psychc, and even other Fighting types because Bewear is part Normal Type.
- Its ability while useful adds yet another common weakness, specifically to Fire attacks.
- It has some recovery options in Pain Split and Rest, but nothing reliable
- SOOOO Slow. Another victim of the base 60 Spe tier which really limits its options
Abilities
Fluffy: Halves the damage taken from moves that make direct contact, but doubles that of Fire-type moves. Needless to say this should always be the ability you choose because it's..your only competitively viable ability. It's actually pretty useful though despite adding an extra weakness, and it complements Bewear's bulk well.
Klutz: The Pokémon cannot receive any effect of hold items except those that affect experience such as Exp.Share or Macho Brace.
Hidden Ability (Available):
Unnerve: The opponent Pokémon will never use their held Berry while the Pokémon is in battle. Opponents in S.O.S. Battles are more likely to call for help.
Movesets
Beware the Bewear
- Hammer Arm
- Ice Punch
- Shadow Claw
- Return
Item Attached: Choice Band
Ability: Fluffy
EVs and Nature:
252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def
Adamant Nature
This is the setup I've been running. The EVs max out Bewear's two highest stats and give it the most bulky offense potential. I chose Hammer Arm over Superpower on this because the main purpose of this set is to be able to take some hits while still dishing out powerful attacks and basically break walls and bruise up your opponent's team as much as possible..which you can't really do that if your main stab move comes with an attack and defense drop every time you use it, and at least with Hammer Arm all you get is a Speed drop which it doesn't have much of to begin with anyway. Ice Punch is there to help you take on 'mons like Garchomp and Landorus-T. Shadow Claw is extremely helpful in combating the likes of Alolan Marowak and Gengar. Last but not least you have Return, your secondary stab, use it to hit things as hard as you can when Hammer Arm and your other coverage moves won't do very much for you.
Other Options
- Superpower: It's your strongest Fighting Type move by far, but it comes with too high of price for my taste. I really wish Bewear got Drain Punch, or even Close Combat would be better because at least it doesn't lower your Atk too.
- Double Edge: It's an alternative option for Return, but you're going to be losing a lot of HP every time you use this move so it's not really worth it in my opinion. I guess you could also try Thrash since it's just as powerful, but then you run the risk of something switching in that either resists or is immune to your Normal stab move entirely and then you're stuck for 2 to 3 turns while you've essentially become set up bait.
- Assault Vest: I know it's tempting to throw an Assault Vest on Bewear, but it has no business trying to take on Special Attackers. It has a low SpDef stat to begin with and it's just not meant to be a true all around tank. Bewear is meant to be more like a bulky offensive bruiser.
- Pain Split: It's your only recovery option outside of the Rest/Sleep Talk combo, so it might be worth considering if you're interesting in trying out a more defensive set.
Countering Bewear
Well you definitely don't need to be smarter than average bear to take down Bewear. It has quite a few weaknesses to common types. The first one that comes to mind is Psychic Type 'mons. Things like Mega Alakazam and Latias/Latios can outspeed and KO you with a Psychic move easily. It also has a pretty glaring weakness to special Fire Type attacks thanks to its ability Fluffy. Then there's popular Fairy Types like Tapu Lele and Flying Types like Landorus-T. Not to mention thanks to its part Normal Typing it's even weak to other Fighting Type 'mons. Although on a more positive note most things won't like switching in to Bewear, and the few 'mons that can safely will need to have some prior damage on it to guarantee a KO.
