Kommo-o

Kommo-o, The Scaly Pokémon. When it spots enemies, it threatens them by jingling the scales on its tail. Weak opponents will crack and flee in panic. Its rigid scales function as offense and defense. In the past, its scales were processed and used to make weapons and other commodities. battles valiantly with its fists, which are armored in steel scales. Kommo-o specializes in uppercuts. When it howls after finishing off its prey, the metallic sounds of its celebrating comrades can be heard from all around.

Overview

Thanks to USUM, Kommo-o gained access to an unique Z-move in Clangorous Soulblaze which makes it one of the most dangerous sweepers around. After using its Z-Move Kommo-o gains a +1 boost on all stats and combined with its great bulk, it turns Kommo-o into a fearsome sweeper with its Dragon & Fighting STAB moves. Kommo-o also gained significant boosts on its moveset such as Close Combat, Iron Head, Fire Punch and Low Kick. It’s base 110/100 offenses are also good enough to dish out respectable damage as well. However, Kommo-o sits on an awkward speed tier as it makes it terribly slow without a boost, and even with +1 Speed, it gets outspeed by many relevant Choice Scarf users. Kommo-o also is over-reliant on its Clangorous Soulblaze boost which can be nullified if a Fairy-type or a Pokemon with Soundproof switches into it and leaves it useless for the rest of the match.
Positives
· Dragon/Fightning is a great offensive STAB combination that allows Kommo-o to spam powerful STAB moves like Close Combat, Clanging Scales, Focus Blast and Draco Meteor backed up by good 110/100 base offenses.
· A respectable base 75/125/105 bulk allows Kommo-o to take hits and set up with ease when healthy. Its good typing also provides resistances to Bug, Dark, Fire, Electric, Grass and Rock, allowing it to switch in with ease.
· Coverage moves such as Poison Jab, Flamethrower, Stone Edge and Iron Head adds a great depth on Kommo-s' movepool.
· Clangorous Soulblaze, a unique Z-move that raises all of its stats while dealing damage, allows Kommo-o to gain a +1 boost on all stats, making it a truly fearsome sweeper.

Negatives
· Fairy types are the bane of Kommo-o's existence. Not only they can make Clangorous Soulblaze useless and deny the boosts it can provide (thanks to their immunity to Dragon) and hit Kommo-o for a x4 damage, but they also resist Kommo-o's secondary STAB making it very hard for it to sweep. Pokemon with the Soundproof ability can also deny the move, though these are less common.
· Base 85 Speed is a below average speed tier. This makes Kommo-o easily outspeed by many Pokemon and even with a +1 boost, it can still be revenged killed by relevant Choice Scarfers like Latios. · Weaknesses to common types such as Ice, Dragon, Flying and Psychic makes it a little difficult to set up with Kommo-o successfully.

Jolly / Hasty Nature

Kommo-o's great bulk and decent power allows it to become a fearsome sweeper once it has set up and ravage the opponent's team. Substitute is the most important move on this set: Due to the prevalence of Fairy types on the USUM metagame, it allows Kommo-o to scout potential Fairy switch-ins preventing him from wasting its Z-move. Clanging Scales is a necessary move on this set as it becomes upgraded to Clangorous Soulblaze thanks to its exclusive Z-Crystal, and gives Kommo-o a +1 boost on all stats while dealing damage. It's also worth mentioning that since both moves are sound based, they can hit through Substitute. Drain Punch allows Kommo-o to regain health consistently throughout the match. If Kommo-o gains its Z-move boost, it gains an incredible staying power. On the other hand, Close Combat is a more powerful STAB dealing huge immediate damage. However, it reduces Kommo-o's defenses which makes it lose bulk throughout the match and undesirable to run on the long run. Belly Drum is an excellent way to raise Kommo-o's Attack to higher levels; with Clangorous Soulblaze's boosts, it becomes easier to set the move at the cost of useful coverage. On the other hand, Flamethrower can be used if coverage against Aegislash is preferred. Poison Jab deserves a special mention on this spot as it allows Kommo-o to efficiently deal with Fairy types who can switch into Clangorous Soulblaze and deny the move’s boost thanks to their immunity to Dragon attacks.

40 HP EVs are used to let Kommo-o set up Substitute 5 times instead of 4. Max Speed and a Jolly nature are used to make Kommo-o as fast as possible and outspeed Mega Alakazam after a Clangorous Soulblaze boost. The rest is dumped in Attack in order to make Kommo-o as strong as possible. A Hasty nature is acceptable assuming Kommo-o will make room for Flamethrower as Kommo-o possess more special resistances than physical.

There is no favoritism when it comes on choosing Kommo-o's ability. Overcoat gives Kommo-o the advantage of being immune to weather effects and powder induced moves like Sleep Powder. Bulletproof makes Kommo-o immune to Ball and Bomb attacks like Shadow Ball and Sludge Bomb. Soundproof (perhaps the less useful of all 3) makes Kommo-o immune to sound based attacks.

Other Options and Partners

· Kommo-o can use a Dragon Dance set, however, it is heavily outclassed by its Dragon-type brethren like Salamence, Dragonite and Charizard-X due to their superior offenses.
· A Specs set is also possible thanks to Kommo-o's decent special moveset with Draco Meteor, Flash Cannon and Focus Blast. However, this set is outclassed by Latios and Latias who possess higher Speed and power.
· Autotomize gives Kommo-o a +2 boost to its Speed allowing it to outspeed more targets. However, without a significant boost, Kommo-o's offenses are average.

VGC & Double Battle Options

Kommo-o went through some serious redemption in the transition to USUM thanks to its unique Z-Move, being the only spread Z-Move in the game. While the stat boosts are just the cherry on top of an already insane Z-Move, this is fairly balanced out by Kommo-o's average stat spread and the inherent weaknesses of a Dragon-type reliant on a Dragon-type STAB move. This makes it fairly reliant on specific teammates such as Tapu Bulu, Mega Gengar, and Incineroar to really stand out, since otherwise its sweep can easily be cut short by opposing Fairy-types like Tapu Koko and Tapu Fini. However, don't let Kommo-o's weaknesses in a Fairy infested metagame distract you from the fact that Kommo-o is a very dangerous threat in a Doubles setting due to very powerful teammates that allow it to effectively set up and blow back teams.

EVs and Nature:
4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest / Timid Nature

Kommo-o is fairly straightforward despite being very particular in terms of team composition. Clanging Scales is a powerful spread move despite the awkward Dragon-type STAB and is necessary for Clangorous Soulblaze, which gives it a +1 boost to all stats in addition to being a powerful spread move. Flamethrower gives Kommo-o some much needed coverage against Steel-types such as Ferrothorn, Aegislash, and Mega Metagross which would otherwise cause trouble for Kommo-o, something that Fighting-type coverage alone can't handle. Close Combat and Focus Blast both grant a powerful single-target secondary STAB, the former of which boasts reliable accuracy while the latter is not affected by Intimidate and does not drop Kommo-o's defenses. Substitute can grant a valuable buffer and punish switches into Fairy-types expecting to deny a Clangorous Soulblaze boost, while Protect is a necessary slot as expected from a Doubles set.

A straightforward Modest spread is chosen to give Kommo-o as much raw power and speed as possible, though Timid can be an option to creep above other foes in the awkward base 90-1oo Speed range while also creeping above opposing Kommo-o. A bulkier spread can be equally effective though that tends to be team-specific since Kommo-o will normally want all the power and speed it can get. Soundproof is similarly the optimal ability choice for avoiding damage from opposing Clanging Scales, which usually outweighs the advantage that Overcoat and Bulletproof can provide. A Mild nature can be used if the extra power from Close Combat is important, though this isn't a necessity since Close Combat's damage output is less important than Clanging Scales.

Other Options & Team Ideas

- Stealth Rock is a surprisingly effective option in a 6v6 Doubles setting, since Kommo-o will often force switches giving it opportunities to set them.
- Drain Punch can be used over Close Combat if a physical option with staying power is desired, though it's fairly weak and becomes even more unimpressive with Intimidate factored in.
- Poison Jab can give Kommo-o an option to deal with Fairy-types directly, though this is typically inferior to letting Mega Gengar deal with the Fairy-types.
- Dragon Pulse may sound like a useless slot, but this lets Kommo-o deal with opposing Kommo-o that think they fear nothing from it due to Soundproof's immunity to Clanging Scales.
- As previously hinted, Shadow Tag is almost a necessity when using Kommo-o since it eases setup and prevents Fairy-types from easily switching in. Mega Gengar is optimal in this regard since it can also eliminate any Fairy-type that is on the field for Kommo-o.
- Likewise, Tapu Bulu and Incineroar are equally important partners for providing support to easy setup while giving Kommo-o some staying power with Grassy Terrain.
