Celesteela

Celesteela, The Launch Pokémon. One of the dangerous UBs, high energy readings can be detected coming from both of its huge arms. Witnesses have seen it burn down a forest by expelling gas from its two arms. Witnesses observed it flying across the sky at high speed.

Overview

Celesteela is one of the best defensive Pokemon in USUM. It has a fantastic defensive typing that only brings two weaknesses, well-rounded stats and a great movepool. Celesteela is able to check dangerous sweepers and offensive powerhouses like Mega Pinsir, Mega Scizor, Latios, Tapu Bulu, Landorus-T, and Tapu Lele thanks to its great bulk and with access to a decent recovery move in Leech Seed, making it one of the most annoying Pokemon to take down. Celesteela can also use offensive sets with Autotomize in order to pull out a sweep taking Celesteela's low Speed to acceptable levels. However, despite all of these strengths, Celesteela struggles with Electric-types and Fire-types that can easily force Celesteela out. On top of this, some Pokemon like Tapu Lele, Landorus-T and Latios will usually carry coverage Z-moves in order to deal with Celesteela and deal massive damage to it.
Positives
ˇ A fantastic Steel/Flying typing leaves Celesteela with 8 resistances, immunities to Ground & Poison, and only two weaknesses in Fire & Electric.
ˇ Its solid 97/103/101 Defenses allows Celesteela to take on offensive threats that it can wall like Mega Pinsir and Latios with ease.
ˇ While it may not have instant recovery, Leech Seed + Protect on a non-grass type Pokemon, combined with its excellent typing, makes it incredibly difficult to wear down as Celesteela can easily stall turns to recover health.
ˇ Beast Boost can potentially make Celesteela more bulkier after a KO, or raise its decent offensive stats to a higher level.
ˇ Celesteela has decent 101/107 offenses with a movepool consisting of Fire Blast, Air Slash, Heavy Slam, Giga Drain, Superpower, Earthquake and Stone Edge. Factor Beast Boost in, and Celesteela can snowball the opposition with the correct support.

Negatives
ˇ Celesteela relies too much on Protect in order to recover health, which is something sweepers can take advantage of and set up without fear. ˇ Electric-types are a pain for Celesteela. The mayority of them have access to Volt Switch which makes it difficult for Celesteela to stall for more turns. Powerful Electric-types like Koko are able to outright OHKO regardless of how much bulk investment it has. Fire-types like Heatran and Mega Charizard X are also troublesome for Celesteela without Ground coverage. ˇ A low base 61 Speed stat, makes Celesteela terribly slow. Even with full investment on Autotomize sets, Celesteela will still find itself being outsped by Choice Scarfers such as Blacephalon.

Abilities

Beast Boost: Increases the Pokémon's highest stat when it knocks out a Pokémon. The defining ability of all Ultra Beasts, and Celesteela makes excellent use of it. As Celesteela is well-rounded, it can be used in many ways to suit your needs, giving it more offensive power, or more annoyingly to your opponent, more defensive powers

Movesets

Apollo 11

- - Leech Seed
- Protect
- Heavy Slam
- Flamethrower / Bulldoze
Item Attached: Leftovers
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs and Nature:
248 HP / 104 Def / 156 SpD
Relaxed Nature

Celesteela's solid bulk and defensive typing turn it into a difficult wall to take down for the opponent's sweepers. Leech Seed allows Celesteela to annoy many non-Grass switch-ins and gain extra recovery. Protect allows Celesteela to scout for Choice & Z-move users while stalling turns for Leech Seed & Leftovers recovery. Heavy Slam is Celesteela's preferred STAB move thanks to its great base power due to Celesteela's weight and it also OHKOs most Tapu Lele. On the final moveslot, Flamethrower is the best option for Celesteela to deal with Mega Scizor and Ferrothorn, two Pokemon that would otherwise be a huge issue for it. Bulldoze, on the other hand, is an option to slow down switch-ins like Heatran and Magnezone getting solid damage on both.

The given EV spread allow Celesteela to avoid the 2HKO from Choice Specs Tapu Lele's Hidden Power Fire if Stealth Rock is not present on the field. 248 HP maximizes Leftovers & Leech Seed recovery while the rest is dumped in Defense in order to allow Celesteela to take on physical attackers like Mega Pinsir and Garchomp.

A Relaxed nature is used to bolster Celesteela's bulk without cutting the power of Heavy Slam and Flamethrower. Additionally, you can move more EVs into SpD to allow Celesteela take better on Special Attackers like Tapu Lele, Gengar and Mega Alakazam.

Saturn V

- Autotomize
- Air Slash
- Fire Blast
- Giga Drain / Hidden Power Ground
Item Attached: Flyinium Z
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs and Nature:
84 HP / 252 SpA / 172 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk

Celesteela's excellent typing and great bulk grants it plenty of opportunities to switch in and set up, becoming a troublesome sweeper for the opponent if it lacks answers to it. Autotomize allows Celesteela to double up its Speed stat in order to outspeed more opponents. Air Slash is Celesteela's primary STAB and with a Flyinium Z, it becomes a Supersonic Strike nuke that can easily OHKO Amoonguss and offensive versions of Landorus-T. Fire Blast provides Celesteela crucial coverage on Steel types like Mega Scizor, Ferrothorn and Jirachi who would otherwise annoy Celesteela. Giga Drain lets Celesteela take on bulky Water types like Tapu Fini, Suicune and Keldeo. If coverage vs Water types is not important, Celesteela can use Hidden Power Ground to deal with Fire types such as Heatran, preventing from being walled by it.

The given Speed investment allow Celesteela to outspeed Greninja after an Autotomize boost while Special Attack is maximized to make the most out of Celesteela's higher Special Attack. The rest is dumped in HP for some extra bulk. Beast Boost is key for Celesteela to raise its Special Attack after a KO, making it capable to snowball through the opponent's team.

A Modest nature is used to give Celesteela the most power out if it. A Timid nature is useless as while it may allow Celesteela to outspeed more threats, it has so much less power and makes it difficult to activate Beast Boost, even with a Z-Crystal due to the lack of power.

Other Options and Partners

ˇ Celesteela can use a physical Autotomize set with Heavy Slam, Fire Blast and Earthquake; however, this set is more easily checked by physical walls such as Therian Forme Landorus.
ˇ Celesteela can use Substitute to even annoy more the opponent if it has activated Leech Seed, however, it losses valuable coverage to make a slot for it.
ˇ Toxic is an option to break through defensive threats such as Porygon2, Tangrowth, and Mew, but it can be difficult to fit onto a set.

VGC, Double, & Triple Battle Options

Celesteela is equally as effective in Doubles as it is in Singles, functioning as a defensive pivot that can easily annoy and wall foes with proper support. Its typing grants it incredible resistances and immunities at the cost of two very unfortunate weaknesses to Fire- and Electric-type moves. However, access to both Leech Seed and Wide Guard also give it useful utility options that allow it to keep supporting the team even with Intimidate being an issue for it. Its broad offensive movepool also gives it a number of offensive options to surprise foes and set itself further apart from Ferrothorn, and do its job of annoying teams. Celesteela does run the risk of becoming too passive against more aggressive teams, but it can very easily chip away at teams that lack proper answers to it.

Delta IV

- Heavy Slam
- Leech Seed
- Acrobatics / Flamethrower / Wide Guard
- Protect
Item Attached: Misty Seed / Leftovers
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs and Nature:
252 HP / 84 Atk / 4 Def / 148 SpD / 20 Spe
Careful Nature

Celesteela fills the role of an offensive support very well, boasting a very powerful STAB option in Heavy Slam due to its weight. While Intimidate is omnipresent in Doubles, Heavy Slam can still pack a punch even after one drop, preventing Celesteela from being too passive. Leech Seed can provide extra longevity and a source of chip damage throughout the match, or otherwise force a switch that Celesteela or its teammate can take advantage of. This also naturally syngerizes with Protect, which Celesteela will be running on a set anyway. Acrobatics is the preferred choice with Misty Seed because it becomes an equally powerful secondary STAB after using its item, with better coverage than Heavy Slam. However, Flamethrower can let Celesteela deal with opposing Steel-types such as Ferrothorn and other Celesteela. Wide Guard can also be used to provide support against opposing spread moves if these are particularly problematic for the team, though this gives up useful coverage.

Misty Seed gives Celesteela a useful boost to its special bulk whenever Misty Terrain is out, which is an easy task given how easy it is to fit Tapu Fini onto a team. This is also the ideal item choice if running Acrobatics so that it can abuse a high powered Flying-type STAB. Leftovers is an equally viable alternative if these conditions aren't easy to meet for you or if Tapu Fini isn't on the team, and gives Celesteela a lot of passive recovery when combined with Leech Seed. The EV spread make appear complicated, but Careful nature with the given HP and Special Defense EVs allow it to survive Heat Wave from Timid Mega Charizard Y in the sun. This also gives Celesteela further Special Defense boosts with Beast Boost.

Other Options & Team Ideas

- Substitute can be used to let Celesteela function as a wall against teams without proper counterplay to it, but this makes it more passive and can be difficult to properly execute due to multiple layers of setup.
- Assault Vest can be used to give Celesteela a more tank-oriented build focusing on its impressive coverage, though this often misses out on power and longevity compared to a traditional set.
- A pinch berry such as Figy Berry can be used to give Celesteela a burst of recovery to let it play a bit more aggressively with Heavy Slam and Leech Seed, though this can works best on a more offensive build that has trouble staying healthy with a Misty Seed boost and Leech Seed.
- Stomping Tantrum gives Celesteela a useful single-target Ground-type move to hit the likes of Incineroar and Heatran, and notably gains a boost from any failed Leech Seed attempts, whether its a predicted switch that doesn't pan out or even a simple miss.
