Guzzlord, The Junkivore Pokémon. It has gobbled mountains and swallowed whole buildings, according to reports. It’s one of the Ultra Beasts. A dangerous Ultra Beast, it appears to be eating constantly, but for some reason its droppings have never been found. Although it’s alien to this world and a danger here, it’s apparently a common organism in the world where it normally lives. It may be constantly hungry—it is certainly always devouring something.
Overview
One of the Ultra Beasts released in SM, Guzzlord shares typing with only Hydreigon making it quite unique. However Guzzlord misses what helped Hydreigon be a potent threats in BW, sitting at a pitiful 43 base Speed. This means Guzzlord is on a timer battle wise as it will have to tank more hits before dishing them out. Thankfully it packs base health to make Wailord proud at 223 base, so taking hits isn't the problem, though offensively it's not the kind of menace you would expect from something that could eat an island for lunch. However, this makes Guzzlord a potent threat in lower tier metagames with its potent ability Beast Boost.
Positives
Wallbreaker - Guzzlord is one of the best wallbreakers in lower tier formats with its nice combination of typing in Dark and Dragon, only being resisted by Fairy type and specific mixed types such as Steel/Fighting. Guzzlord even has the coverage to hit those for Super Effective damage though. Dragon typing is also rarer among lower tier threats and as such is a coveted typing for balanced and bulky offensive teams as a pivot that resists very common Pokemon. All this is wrapped up with Guzzlords colossal 223 base HP, make it very difficult to KO easily.
Negatives
Leans on Team Support - Guzzlord has okay offensive stats with 101 Attack and 97 Special Attack, and as stated its 223 base health is incredible, but that's about it. Guzzlord has 53 base in each defense which means even with its good typing, some high power moves are going to still beat down Guzzlord and thus shorten its usefulness. Next, Guzzlord has 43 base Speed and much like Snorlax, Guzzlord's going to take a hit before getting to attack something, which also cuts into its high health pool. As such, it needs some support from Pokemon that can use Volt Switch or U-Turn to bring it in safely, with Rotom, Silvally, or Alolan Persian being great options to consider.
Abilities
Beast Boost - Raises the Pokemon's highest stat by one stage when scoring a KO - A strong ability overall as it furthers Guzzlord's power and thus ability to break through walls and defensive cores with ease.
Movesets
Wallbreaker
-Draco Meteor
-Dark Pulse
-Fire Blast
-Heavy Slam / Sludge Bomb
Item Attached: Dragonium Z
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs and Nature:
76 Def / 252 SpA / 180 Spe
Modest Nature
With EVs to outrun Vaporeon and help with the match up against Incineroar, Guzzlord preys on Fire/Grass/Water cores. Draco Meteor is Guzzlord's most powerful attack and with Dragonium Z it can have a single chance to muscle through a bulky wall. Dark Pulse is a more spammable STAB which lacks the nasty recoil of Draco Meteor. Fire Blast is the first coverage option as it melts Steel types such as Silvally and Steelix as well as hitting Grass types harder. Last slot is open for Fairy type coverage, Sludge Bomb is fairly useful due to 30% poison chance while Heavy Slam hits special walls such as Slurpuff and Mega Audino harder.
Modest nature is fairly straightforward, Guzzlord isn't that strong without a boost and its Speed is almost hopeless so there's no reason not to focus on its offensive capability. However, investing in Speed EVs does let out outspeed slower walls which allows it to do its job in the first place.
Other Options
Choice Specs - Being special focused, Choice Specs are a good option as it buffs Guzzlord's power to what it would be post Beast Boost.
Possible Partners
Speed Control - Due to its low Speed, forms of Speed control at great for Guzzlord. Ribombee is one of the best answers here as it has access to Stun Spore and Sticky Web with access to Quiver Dance, U-Turn, and Fairy typing. All of this makes Ribombee a strong choice in general as it can look to sweep after Guzzlord weakens things. Galvantula does the same thing but arguably with more power due to its ability Compound Eyes boosting Thunder's accuracy. Finally Slurpuff also has access to Sticky Web and good bulk to act as a pivot for Fighting attacks against Guzzlord.
Countering Guzzlord
Faster threats - 43 base Speed means that Guzzlord is forced out by Pokemon that can hit it first for super effective damage. Sneasel is one of the forerunners here with access to Icicle Crash and Low Kick which can rip through Guzzlord, but something has to get KOed for Sneasel to get in safely. Whimsicott is another good option and its Fairy typing makes it one of the better options as it resists both Guzzlord's STABs and hits back for x4 damage, but it has to watch out for Guzzlord's coverage.
