Emerald was dispatched by Prof. Oak & Crystal to the Battle Frontier to protect the awakening phantom Pokémon Jirachi, against an evil man named Guile Hideout who is after it. Claiming that he doesn't like Pokémon but only Pokémon battling, the young boy owns no Pokémon, and competes in the Frontier facilities, a hobby which he has decided to fulfill along with his job, by borrowing any Pokémon of choice from Crystal, who basically owns every single specie of non-legendary Pokémon.
Emerald disguises his short built with platform shoes and extra long sleeves, and hides plenty of gadgets inside these sleeves, which include a pair of magic hand extensors and a gun which shoots out glumps of soil inter-mingled with thread.
The boy has the heightened abilities to identify where a Pokémon originally hails from, and carries around a collection of soil from different locations across Kanto, Johto and Hoenn. In face with a rampaging Pokémon, he fires off the soil of their homeland to create a diamond shaped pattern on the ground, which is capable of soothing and calming the Pokémon by the nostalgic scent of the soil.
Emerald is acquainted with the legendary dragons Latios and Latias, who brought him to the Frontier and constantly watch over him.
