Hatterene

Hatterene, the Silent Pokémon. It emits psychic power strong enough to cause headaches as a deterrent to the approach of others. If you're too loud around it, you risk being torn apart by the claws on its tentacle. This Pokémon is also known as the Forest Witch. This Pokémon can read the emotions of creatures over 30 miles away. The minute it senses hostility, it goes on the attack. Beams like lightning shoot down from its tentacles. It's known to some as the Raging Goddess.

Overview

Hatterene was met with great excitement in the new generational, not as your rival Bede’s ace, but as the next Magic Bounce user to be added. And like Mega Sableye, Hatterene is rather bulky, enabling it to repeatedly pivot in and deny Entry Hazards, attempted status, etc. And that’s not all, Hatterene can provide amazing support with Aromatherapy and Healing Wish or brutal disruption with Trick Room. Couple that with a brutal Special Attack and relatively thorough coverage, and Hatterene can fill many roles from support Pokémon to dedicated Trick Room sweeper.

Just like the Wicked Witch of the West, Hatterene does have its own weaknesses. Psychic Fairy is poor defensively, giving few resists and awkward weaknesses that bely what should be favorable match ups. Base 29 Speed is brutally slow, leaving Hatterene outsped by most dedicated walls outside of Trick Room and compromising its good bulk even further. Having only Draining Kiss for HP recovery further strain’s Hetterene’s bulk, being inconsistent in the amount of HP it restores. Hatterene may not live up to its initial hype, especially as old threats were reintroduced, but it this witch can still cast a potent spell over the battle.
Positives
Magic Bounce is an incredible ability, reversing entry hazards and punishing Pokémon reliant on Status moves.
Base 136 Special Attack and near perfect neutral coverage between STABs and Mystical Fire ensures Hatterene is hitting hard with few safe answers.
Great support movepool including rare clerical options like Aromatherapy, and Healing Wish alongside Speed control in Nuzzle and Trick Room

Negatives
Debilitatingly slow outside of Trick Room. Hatterene is outsped by anything not named Ferrothorn and will take an attack before striking back.
Psychic Fairy typing is poor defensively, leaving only 2 resistances and an immunity while worsening matchups against opposing Poison and Dark types.
Poor HP and lack of reliable recovery prevents Hatterene from taking as many hits as it would like.

Movesets

Witch’s Domain

-Trick Room
-Psyshock
-Dazzling Gleam
-Mystical Fire
Ability: Magic Bounce
Item: Life Orb
EVs and Nature:
252 HP/ 4 Def / 252 SAtk
Quiet Nature

Trick Room Sweeper Hatterene takes advantage of its traits into one potent package, wielding its horrible speed and fantastic Special Attack to take control of a match. Trick Room pairs beautifully with Hatterene’s horrible speed as well as enabling similarly slow partners to go on the offensive. Psyshock is a fantastic STAB, invalidating normal Special Sponges like Blissey and Galarian Slowking from stopping Hatterene. Dazzling Gleam is Hatterene’s other STAB of choice having Fairy’s wholly amazing coverage. Mystical Fire rounds out the set, hitting Steel types that would otherwise resist Hatterene’s STABs and increasing Hatterene’s effective special bulk.

DYNAMAX:
Hatterene loves Dynamaxing under Trick Room, providing a significant boost to its bulk and more punch to all of its attacks, though it does lack the scaling a dedicated Dynamax Sweeper provides. Max Mindstorm and Max Starfall do setup beneficial terrains that support both Hatterene and its teammates while disrupting Pokémon that rely on their own terrain. Hatterene’s Gigantamax form is not recommended. While having two terrain setting max moves has a bit of anti-synergy, the Confusion effect from G-Max Smite provides less value than Misty Terrain in most circumstances.

EVs and Items:
Max HP and Special Attack to emphasize Hatterene’s bulk and prowess is recommended. Life Orb gives Hatterene immediate power, Leftovers gives longevity and Expert Belt can be considered to give a bit of Extra power without compromising bulk. Choice Specs can provide more immediate power and strains opponent’s switch-ins even further. Alternatively, if going for a more supportive/Calm Mind Hatterene, maximizing investment in Defense gives the best overall bulk.

Partners:
Having a partner that can abuse Trick Room is ideal if Hatterene is forced out. Physical Wallbreakers like Crawdaunt and Rhyperior stand out, complimenting Hatterene’s special prowess with their Physical, while being able to answer several of Hatterene's weaknesses. Answers to Steel types are greatly appreciated, as they tend to have the bulk to take a Mystical Fire. Magnezone is of course an excellent Steel type answer, and enjoys the benefits of Trick Room as well as Hatterene’s ability to answer Fighting types. Alolan Marowak, Conkeldurr, and Heatran can also fill this role to varying degrees. Entry Hazard setters deserve mention, for not only helping Hatterene reach for KOs, but to punish attempts to stall Trick Room out by repeatedly switching to advantageous setups. Landorus-Therian is an excellent example, on top of setting Stealth Rocks fulfills the Offensive Fairy/Ground core, in addition to Intimidate blunting attacks easing the setup of Trick Room.

Other Options:
Healing Wish/Misty Explosion -If using Hatterene as a dedicated Trick Room setter, this gets Hatterene off the field cleanly and enables Hatterene’s Trick Room abusing partner to come in safely while blocking attempts at Defogging. Alternatively if Hatterene has no more jobs to fulfill can bring an ally back from the brink.
Aromatherapy -Fantastic and rare clerical option for clearing unwanted status.
Psychic -stronger than Psyshock and worth using if relying on Hatterene’s teammates to answer Special Sponges.
Draining Kiss -much weaker than Dazzling Gleam, but STAB recovery is invaluable on a Pokémon that utilizes its bulk.
Giga Drain -Provides recovery and coverage.
Shadow Ball -Answers opposing Psychic types, but most tend to get hard by Fairy STAB regardless.
Calm Mind -Gives Hatterene the extra power it needs to punch through sturdier targets, though it is hard to fit on Trick Room sets without sacrificing valuable coverage.
Nuzzle -The only non Electric type to get this move and provides nice speed control, but Hatterene prefers Trick Room.

Countering Hatterene

Heatran is an outright counter to Hatterene, taking pittance from all of Hatterene’s moves, generally on the slow slide so it isn’t bothered by Trick Room and threatening a 2HKO with Magma Storm.

Excadrill is a nightmare for Hatterene, able to ignore Magic Bounce with Mold Breaker and setup Stealth Rocks straight up before threatening the OHKO with STAB Iron Head. Other specially defensive Steel types like Jirachi and Celesteela that can eat a Mystical Fire also perform excellently, able to threaten a KO back with their STABs, but have to be wary about switching into a Mystical Fire which can enable Hatterene to KO them in turn. If Hatterene lacks Mystical Fire, than most Steel types turn into outright counters as well.

Chansey, Blissey and Florges can take any set lacking Psyshock as to a lesser extent Slowking on sets lacking Shadow Ball.

Hatterene is rather easy to wear down thanks to its low speed and outside of Trick Room is easy for dedicated Wallbreakers to check Hatterene after a bit of chip.
