Free Battle
The Free Battle mode allows you to battle with any of the Pokémon useable within the game. This can be done either against the computer or against other players. When Free Battle mode is selected, it will give three further options
Free Battle
Level 1-30 Rules
Level 50-55 Rules.
This gives you the choice of the various rules which you wish to impose upon the battle. The Level 1-30 and Level 50-55 rules match the rules seen within the the Battle Tournaments while Free Battle gives entirely different options, imposing no restrictions whatsoever barring the usable Pokémon.

As you can't pick Rental Pokémon within the Free Battle rules, you get given 8 different trainers from whom you can select a team to battle both as your party or for the opponent to use in the battle. These provide a decent alternative to using your own Pokémon, but the levels are restricted.
