Gyarados

Gyarados, The Atrocious Pokémon. It has an extremely aggressive nature. It's Hyper Beam totally incinerates all targets. Rarely seen in the wild. Huge and vicious, it is capable of destroying entire cities in a rage. They say that during past wars, it would appear and leave blazing ruins in its wake. Once it appears, it goes on a rampage. It appears whenever there is world conflict, burning down any place it travels through. When Magikarp evolved, its brain cells undergo a structural transformation. It is said that this transformation is to blame for it's wildly violent nature.

Battle Moveset

A Good Moveset for Gyarados would have to be this:

Attacks:

Dragon Dance
Hidden Power Flying OR Return
Earthquake
Taunt

Items Attached:

Salac Berry

Preferred Nature:

Adamant

Strategy Using Gyarados

Gyarados has impressive attack and a decent movepool to match. Even with the a 4x weakness to Electric, it can learn a move to counter those types (or if you're up against pokemon such as Jolteon/Electrode, then you should switch)
I've seen this moveset used many times and it works, Dragon dance boosts Gyarados attack and speed (obviously). With decent special defense, chances are that it will survive most special attacks to gain the boosts from Dragon dance that is necessary to sweep.
HP flying gets the STAB and can be used against what Earthquake won't hit, although if I was up against pokemon such as Gengar, a switch would be more logical.
I'm sure Gyarados has a few other possible movesets, but whatever, this one is easy to understand. Since Taunt prevents any sort of powering up to match Gyarados when he's powering up, i.e. from Pokemon that know Psych up.
In case you're too lazy to find HP flying, I suggest replacing it with return, there isn't much else to replace it with. I don't need to explain the EV's and Nature after all of this time, just change it to whatever you think will suite your Gyarados.

EV Corner:

Max out the EVs in Attack & Speed for Gyarados with any remaining in HP

Strategy Against Gyarados

Gyarados' Defenses are about averagebut it's special is higher so a Physical Volley or an Electric one should work wonders

Contest Moveset

A good Contest Moveset for Gyarados would have to be this for the Cool Contest best with Lonely, Adament, Naughty or Brave Nature:

Attacks:

Rain Dance
Thunderbolt
Thunder Wave
Body Slam

Items Attached:

Red Scarf

Strategy Using Gyarados

If you do the attacks in this following order you should have very few problems; 1st - Rain dance, 2nd - Thunderbolt, 3rd - Thunderwave/Body slam, 4th - Rain dance, 5th - Thunderbolt

Locations in Games

Animé Appearences

Gyarados has had quite a few Animé Appearences. First James' Magikarp evolved into Gyarados and caused the group to be swept up in a Tornado. After that Misty hooked one in the Safari Zone. A trainer had one on New Island which was cloned. Prof. Ivy took care of one, Nurse Joy also got one which evolved from a large Magikarp. Misty battled one in the Whirl Cup. During a Team Rocket scheme, a Magikarp quickly evolved into one and kept it's Red colour. It started causing trouble at the Lake of Rage until Lance caught it. After that Clair had one and used it in her battle against Ash. After that, Misty got one at the Cerulean Gym and used it to protect the Mirage Kingdom from General Hanson. Lance's Red Gyarados soon returned and helped to protect Ash & Co. and quell the battle between Groudon & Kyogre. The rest (including those not listed) are mere cameos and irrelevant
