Strategy Using Dragonite

Ah, Dragonite, a very powerful pokemon indeed, and one of my favorites. With R/S, it has bonuses that it never enjoyed in previous eras of pokemon, such as now having a great physical move in Earthquake, and even though it had hyper beam in R/B/Y, it was made horrible in G/S/C. However, the biggest bonus it has received is the new stat upper "Dragon Dance." With this move, you raise your attack and speed by one level, making any pokemon who uses it a speedy powerhouse that is extremely hard to take down, because after one or two dances, not many pokemon are going to be faster than this dragon! You may be wondering why thunderbolt is there, especially since I have it as adamant. Well, the problem with a straight up physical set, no matter the pokemon, is that Skarmory’s defense and type (it has no physical weaknesses) make it very hard to take down. However, with Thunderbolt, with a relatively weak special attack even (212 if you have no EVs in it) is enough to cripple Skarmory, and take down a fellow Dancer in Gyarados. Aerial Ace is there for a nice physical STAB move, very reliable and has a decent type variance. Earthquake takes care of some types that Aerial Ace does not do a good job with (Rock and Steel) and is slightly stronger than Aerial Ace.

However, Dragonite has one huge draw back. It is its elemental weakness to ice that makes many people abstain from using Dragonite. Before it dances it is a little slow so that is something to watch out for in battle. Besides that it does not have any noticeable chinks in its armor. However, it should be noted that the 4x weakness to ice is a huge chink in its armor, and one would be advised to keep a sharp eye for pokemon with ice beam.

Dragonite is not exactly top tier, Salamance has it severely outclassed, and however Dragonite is still worth a look if you simply do not want to use Salamance or if you do not like using overused pokemon. Dragonite is a solid pokemon, and worthy of any team.

Strategy Against Dragonite

Dragonite has average defense and average Special Defense. Your best bet is to pick up on it's Ice Weakness. A Few Ice Beams or a Blizzard and it will be down. Alternatively, use a Dragon attack on it too.
