Enamorus

Enamorus, the Love Hate Pokémon. When it flies to this land from across the sea, the bitter winter comes to an end. According to legend, this Pokémon’s love gives rise to the budding of fresh life across Hisui.

Overview

A fourth member of the genies was not expected in Legends Arceus, and not properly usable until the ninth generation, but Enamorus makes up for lost time with aplomb. Base 135 Special Attack is brutal on top of potent Fairy STAB, but Enamorus is one of the few Fairy types with Ground attacks, giving it near perfect neutral coverage. Couple this with Fire and Psychic coverage and there is little that Enamorus can’t hit. 106 Speed is well above average as well, getting the jump on many already fast Pokémon such as Garchomp, and Volcarona while speed tying with Iron Treads. Enamorus is far from a one trick Pony either. Its Attack is perfectly serviceable and is easily boosted with the amazing Contrary + Superpower combination, ensuring little is safe until you see Enamorus attack. Enamorus has no problem hitting the field either, with its Fairy and Flying typing providing many resistances and a vital Ground immunity for getting in safely.

Enamorus has a bit of instability. Her defenses are nothing impressive, leaving her a bit on the frail side despite her fantastic base typing, especially troublesome given the speed creep of this generation leaving Base 106 far less impressive than before, leaving Enamorus prone to being revenge KO’d by the likes of Weavile, Iron Boulder, Meowscarda and more. While Contrary is an insane ability, Enamorus lacks the tools to abuse it outside of Superpower and Stellar Tera Blast, leaving Contrary far more situational unless you use Enamorus as a Terastalization sink, with all the problems associated with that. Physical Enamorus is much less impressive as well, lacking the supreme coverage her special sets boast. Additionally, Enamorus sorely misses having Flying STAB, depriving her of an excellent offensive option. Enamorus has some incredible highs marred by obvious gaps in her movepool, but far from enough for Enamorus to be anything less than a tricky opponent.
Positives
Base 135 Special Attack and near perfect coverage with Fairy STAB and Earth Power makes Enamorus a frightening Special Attacker regardless of investment.
Base 115 Attack aided by Contrary boosted Superpower enables Enamorus to run physical and mixed sets as well, making it an unpredictable attacker.
Flying Fairy typing provides a myriad of resistances and immunities, facilitating pivoting Enamorus in.
Base 106 Speed is well above average, enabling Enamorus to get the jump on most Pokémon

Negatives
Poor 70/70/80 defenses leaves Enamorus struggling to tank hits.
Enamorus’ physical movepool is noticeably poorer than her special movepool, leaving obvious gaps with physical sets.
Lack of Flying STAB deprives Enamorus of a potent offensive option.

Movesets

Scary Mary Quite Contrary

-Play Rough
-Superpower
-Tera Blast
-Tailwind
Ability: Contrary
Item: Life Orb
EVs and Nature:
4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature

This physical Enamorus set makes the most out of Contrary and subverts common answers to Enamorus, especially sponges looking to prey on Special sets. Play Rough is Enamorus’ lone physical Fairy STAB, but thankfully quite good, and with its great coverage, applies the bulk of Enamorus’ pressure once setup. Superpower is Enamorus’ primary setup move thanks to Contrary effective being Fighting coverage and Bulk Up in one move. Important Fighting coverage at that, hitting targets like Blissey, Hisuian Goodra, Kingambit, Iron Treads and more. The Defense boost from Superpower cannot be discounted either, making Enamorus much harder to revenge KO after one or two Superpowers. Tera Blast is on this set specifically for the interaction between Stellar Tera Blast and Contrary, providing thankfully perfect neutral coverage and boosting in one move, while helping bluff a Special set. Tailwind enables Enamorus to further subvert expectations, enabling it to get an important Speed advantage on Pokémon like Weavile, Meowscarada, Greninja and Dragapult, enabling Enamorus to threaten them out and insulate itself against revenge KOing.

This Enamorus set works best on offensive teams as a lure and setup sweeper, bluffing a Special attacking set before eliminating key pieces of an opponent’s backbone for Enamorus’s special attacking partners to exploit, with Tailwind giving application against more offensive teams.

Tera Types:
Enamorus is heavily reliant on Stellar Tera Blast to boost up quickly since it can’t be blocked unlike Superpower. It goes beyond the abuse of Contrary Stellar Tera Blast however. Enamorus’ Attack while good, isn’t amazing compared to more dedicated physical attackers, and it requires a boost to meaningfully threaten bulkier targets. The boost from Stellar Terastalization covers for this, giving Enamorus a burst of power when first setting up, and can enable Play Rough to annihilate targets after setting up.

EVs and Items:
Standard sweeper investment of max Attack and Speed is recommended. Neither Enamorus’ Attack or its Speed are peerless, so its needs to scrabble for each bit of power and speed it can get so it can apply pressure. If running Special coverage, going for a Naďve Nature is recommended, as the Special Defense drop won’t negatively impact the Defense buffs Enamorus gets from Superpower. Life Orb is recommended for the item, giving a significant power boost while retaining the flexibility that makes Enamorus so dangerous. Heavy Duty Boots is a good alternative, protecting Enamorus from Stealth Rocks, so it doesn’t tear itself apart so quickly when switching in.

Partners:
Special Attacking partners like love physical Enamorus for its luring abilities, opening the way for late game sweeps and reducing counterplay once their defensive checks have been removed. Darkrai and Greninja are particularly apt examples, loving Enamorus for removing sponges like Blissey and Clodsire as well as having a positive matchup against opposing Dark and Fighting types like Kingambit and Ting-Lu. In turn, they annihilate the Ghost types that block Enamorus’ Superpower. Especially Fairy resistant ghosts like Skeledirge and Gholdengo. Do take care not to load up one’s team with too many Special Attackers and make it obvious that this is a physical Enamorus.

Other Options:
Zen Headbutt provides invaluable coverage into the Poison types that resist both Play Rough and Superpower, invaluable for pushing past Clodsire. Moonblast is plenty strong even when uninvested and fantastic for obliterating physical walls like Dondozo and Great Tusk that could otherwise take a Special Assault well. Healing Wish is another tool great for breathing life into a battered teammate, enabling a second shot at sweeping. Enamorus’ speed is quite good, so it can make great use of Taunt to shutdown walls that think to use it for setup or attempt to outlast it.

VGC & Doubles Options

Despite Enamorus’ amazing versatility, she struggles to stand out in the Doubles format, thanks to competition with the best Pokémon available Flutter Mane. Flutter Mane has the exact same Special Attack and Fairy STAB that makes Enamorus so feared but is much faster and has actual defensive utility thanks to its fantastic Special Defense and natural immunity to Fake Out and Extreme Speed. Flutter Mane being so popular means that teams that are prepared for it are in some ways prepared for Enamorus. Enamorus does have its merits over Flutter Mane. Natural access to Earth Power and Mystical Fire enables Enamorus to muscle past common Fairy resists like Heatran, Entei, and Amoonguss while offering much more potent speed control in Tailwind. Contrary is much stronger in Doubles than in Singles, with Intimidate and Snarl users being commonplace and easy for Enamorus to grab a boost. It is also far more flexible than Flutter Mane, having access to physical coverage enables Enamorus to muscle through sponges like Hisuian Goodra that can soak Flutter Mane’s assaults with ease.

Vested Contrarian

-Superpower
-Tera Blast
-Dazzling Gleam
-Earth Power
Tera Type: Stellar
Ability: Contrary
Item: Assault Vest
EVs and Nature:
220 HP /140 Def / 4 SAtk / 60 SDef / 84 Spe
Serious Nature

Enamorus takes advantage of the synergy between Assault Vest and Contrary Superpower to give it far more bulk than its defenses would suggest, enabling Enamorus to last long enough to accrue the boosts and steamroll opponents. Superpower provides the all-important Defense boost, while scaling up its own power with attack as well, and can take advantage of how common Intimidate is to escalate even faster than Enamorus’ special offense, while also hitting Incineroar quite hard. Stellar Tera Blast provides perfect coverage, punishes opposing Teras and gives an important early game boost to power so Enamorus can start applying pressure from the word go. Dazzling Gleam is spread Fairy STAB, and while unimpressive at first, can start piling on damage very quickly, especially after a Stellar Tera Blast contrary boost. Earth Power rounds out the set, offering vital Ground coverage against many Fairy resistant targets like Entei, Gholdengo, Iron Crown and common Steel, Poison and Fire Teras meant to stop Flutter Mane.

Since Enamorus is using everything, it really can’t afford to drop any stat, hence the neutral nature, though going for a Speed boosting Nature to get the jump on more targets is certainly tempting. The 84 Speed EVs is sufficient to outspeed uninvested Tornadus, as well as speed tie with 132 Speed EV Entei, while having the bulk to withstand Flutter Mane’s Moonblast or Thunderbolt, be 3HKOd by Ogerpon after a Superpower barring crits, favored to not be OHKOd by Chien-Pao’s Icicle Crash at +1, etc. Stellar Tera is mandatory for the boosts it provides.

Other Options and Preferred Partners:

Thundurus provides rather terrifying support for Enamorus, having access to Eerie Impulse and Scary Face to not only ruin the opponent’s offenses and speed, but also give Enamorus effective Nasty Plot and Agility boosts thanks to Contrary. Redirection support from Amoonguss, Ogerpon and Sinistcha are also recommended, keeping Enamorus healthy as it snowballs up. Enamorus also checks a lot of the Grass resistances running around in turn, providing excellent synergy there.

Countering Enamorus

Enamorus has a dizzying array of sets that make safely switching into it a risky prospect, and Enamorus’ wide coverage even more so.

Sponges tend to deal well with special sets. Blissey is by far the clear standout, able to tank multiple Specs Moonblasts and chip Enamorus down with Seismic Toss. Assault Vest Toxapex and Assault Vest Hisuian Goodra also work well but must be wary of being 2HKO’d by Specs Earth Power after hazard damage.

Physical sets are easier to handle defensively given Enamorus lower Attack and poor movepool. Skarmory and Corviknight can comfortably soak up the initial attacks, but need Iron Head to put Enamorus down before it gets out of hand. Given the physical set’s boosting prowess, Unaware Walls like Skeledirge and Dondozo are key, able to endure repeated attacks and grind Enamorus down through their own assaults.

Offensively checking Enamorus is by far more reliable given its speed tier misses out on several important targets. Weavile is by far Enamorus’ biggest nightmare, able to revenge kill quite easily thanks to priority Ice Shard, and naturally outspeeds in general. Other excellent options include Greninja with its Ice Beam, Meowscarda with Triple Axel, Cornerstone Ogerpon, and Darkrai with Sludge Bomb or Ice Beam. For Scarf sets Banded Tera Normal Dragonite can easily secure a OHKO with Extremespeed but needs significant chip to do so if Enamorus has gotten a Superpower Defense boost.

Therian Corner

Enamorus, the Love-Hate Pokémon. A different guise from its feminine humanoid form. From the clouds, it descends upon those who treat any form of life with disrespect and metes out wrathful, ruthless punishment.

Overview

Enamorus Therian Forme has probably the most drastic divergence from its Incarnate forme of all the Therian formes, trading away her great speed for respectable bulk, finally enabling Enamorus Therian Forme to make the most of its fantastic Flying Fairy typing capable of enduring attacks from the likes of Cinderace, Hydrapple, Ogerpon and more. This change in bulk comes at no sacrifice to power, so the incredible base 135 Special Attack backed by Fairy STAB and fantastic coverage remains an ever-persistent threat. Enamorus Therian Forme makes the most of this bulk, utilizing setup moves like Calm Mind and Iron Defense alongside Draining Kiss to maximize longevity. That slow speed is also fantastic on Trick Room teams, with Enamorus Therian Forme outslowing even already normally slow Pokémon like Ursaluna and Iron Hands.

However, that low speed is more often than not a shackle, with Enamorus Therian Forme often forced to tank attacks before acting and cutting into its bulk. Lack of any reliable recovery outside of Draining Kiss further exasperates Enamorus Therian Forme’s defensive woes, preventing her from healing when she would need healing the most. The loss of Contrary is another blow, preventing Enamorus Therian Forme from taking advantage of the mixed sets her Incarnate forme is known for, enabling more consistent counterplay. Enamorus Therian Forme is a departure from the norm for the genies, but still maintains the same legacy of power as her Incarnate forme.
Positives
Base 135 Special Attack and near perfect coverage with Fairy STAB and Earth Power makes Enamorus a frightening Special Attacker regardless of investment.
74/110/100 defenses is well above average, and with Enamorus Therian Forme’s many resistances, can easily tank several hits.
Draining Kiss and boosting moves in Iron Defense and Calm Mind enable Enamorus Therian Forme to get the most out of her longevity.

Negatives
Base 46 Speed is incredibly slow, requiring Enamorus Therian Forme to take attacks before doing anything and cutting into its bulk.
Draining Kiss as the only recovery option is inconsistent, leaving Enamorus Therian Forme struggling against targets that resist Fairy.
Lack of Contrary makes Enamorus more predictable without any boosting options to its Attack.
If you're wanting to use it in Trick Room, it's nigh-on impossible to get one with the desired 0IVs

Movesets

Calming Turtle

-Calm Mind
-Draining Kiss
-Earth Power
-Mystical Fire
Ability: Overcoat
Item: Leftovers
EVs and Nature:
252 HP / 252 Defense / 4 SAtk Bold Nature

Calm Mind Enamorus Therian Forme makes the most of its bulk and typing to come in and nab multiple boosts, becoming incredibly hard to break as it goes for a sweep. Draining Kiss is the only reliable source of recovery Enamorus has, but between STAB, Fairy’s impressive coverage and Enamorus’ fantastic Special Attack, it works as both recovery and Enamorus’ main offensive move. Earth Power is vital on any special set for the superb coverage it provides, enabling Enamorus Therian Forme to threaten out most Fairy STAB resists. Mystical Fire hits a few of the targets that Fairy STAB and Earth Power do not, such as Corviknight, Skarmory, and Amoonguss while providing further Special Attack drops that make Enamorus Therian Forme even harder to break specially.

Enamorus Therian Forme find its home on bulky offense teams, its good defense and immunities enabling it to switch safely into common Ground, Fighting, Grass and Dragon attackers, while being able to take advantage of the chip damage they deal to threaten out targets to setup.

Tera Types:
Enamorus Therian Forme does well with its base typing, though common Ice, Electric and Stealth Rock weaknesses, along with persistent issues with Steel, and Poison attackers, Terastalization can be desirable to shed to enable setup. Tera Water is popular defensively, evoking CroCune sets of old, with Water’s few weaknesses and important resistances, including Ice make it an excellent pick, though the shared Electric weakness is unfortunate. Tera Steel is another staple, providing resistances to all but Electric attacks of Enamorus’ weaknesses, though Fire types remain a persistent issue pre and post Terastalization. Ground is a more offensive Terastalization option, but synergizes wonderfully with Earth Power, and the Rock and Electric resistances are invaluable in keeping Enamorus alive.

EVs and Items:
Max HP and Defense to maximize physical bulk, relying on Calm Mind to address Enamorus Therian Forme’s special stats, and facilitating grabbing Calm Mind boosts and having enough bulk after being attacked to recover. If not running Trick Room, 36 Speed can be considered to outrun Minimum Speed Ursaluna. If running Trick Room using Teammates, moving investment to Special Attack and a Quiet Nature is preferable to apply more immediate pressure while in Trick Room. Leftovers is preferred for the passive recovery it provides, having Enamorus Therian Forme recover even while setting up. Heavy Duty Boots is a good alternative so that Enamorus Therian Forme isn’t ravaged by Stealth Rocks while switching in.

Partners:
Pivots to get Enamorus Therian Forme safely to setup are amazing. Galarian Slowking is a clear standout thanks to Future Sight support heavily disincentivizing opposing Poison types from switching in while setting up and applying continuous pressure. In fact its matchup into Poison types in general and its great Special bulk pair nicely with Enamorus Therian Forme’s better physical bulk, resistance to Dark and outright immunity to Ground. Trick Room setters make for amazing partners for Enamorus Therian Forme, its low speed easily outslowing everything not named Slowking in Trick Room, enabling it to setup and recover much more safely. Since users like Cresselia and Hatterene are Psychic type, they offer many of the same synergies in threatening opposing Poison types while appreciating Enamorus addressing Dark types.

Other Options:
Moonblast can comfortably be run alongside Draining Kiss for a STAB attack with more immediate power. Iron Defense can be run alongside Calm Mind for a nigh immortal Enamorus, taking advantage of the amazing coverage Draining Kiss and Earth Power has together. Choice Specs is another option on Trick Room teams, applying immediate power to make up for the limited turns available to abuse it.

VGC & Doubles Options

Enamorus Therian Forme’s abysmal speed lending itself well to Trick Room is quite the boon in Doubles formats where Trick Room is much stronger. That abysmal speed is especially vital, considering Enamorus Therian Forme outslows common staples that otherwise threaten Trick Room teams in Iron Hands and Amoonguss, enabling it to continuous apply pressure through common anti Trick Room measures. Overcoat also shines beautifully, outright no selling Amoonguss Spore and Rage Powder, as well as ignoring other Rage Powder users as well. These factors on top of Enamorus Therian Forme’s near perfect coverage and immense Special Attack make it an attractive prospect/ However, Enamorus Therian Forme’s speed regulates her pretty much to hard Trick Room teams, lacking the versatility that Flutter Mane provides, who ironically is a good Trick Room setter itself. Ursaluna Bloodmoon is another special Trick Room attacker that provides intense competition to Enamorus Therian Forme, having much stronger Ground STAB than Enamorus Therian Forme’s mere coverage.

Genbu Gal Pal

-Moonblast
-Dazzling Gleam
-Earth Power
-Mystical Fire
Tera Type: Fairy
Ability: Overcoat
Item: Choice Specs
EVs and Nature:
252 HP / 252 SAtk / 4 SDef
Quiet Nature

Standard Trick Room Specs Enamorus Therian Forme, taking advantage of her immense coverage and immediate power under Trick Room to apply pressure once Trick Room is up, its good natural bulk making it hard remove. Like Flutter Mane, dual Fairy STAB in Moonblast and Dazzling Gleam is preferred, allowing for immense spread damage or pure removal power as the situation calls for it. Earth Power returns yet again as one of the best coverage moves a Fairy type can ask for, obliterating common Fire and Steel types like Entei, Archaludon, Torkoal, and the many Tera Fire and Tera Steel users as well. Mystical Fire hits a few targets that Earth Power doesn’t, such as Amoonguss, while having synergy with Sunny Day strategies and indirectly increasing the special bulk of Enamorus Therian Forme’s team.

EVs are to maximize bulk and power while minimizing speed to be as efficient a Trick Room sweeper as possible. Tera Fairy is preferred, again for the same reasons as Flutter Mane, boosting Enamorus Therian Forme’s two STABs to the stratosphere while removing exploitable Ice and Electric weaknesses.

Other Options and Preferred Partners:

Farigiraf is the Trick Room setter of choice for Enamorus Therian Forme, its Armor Tail providing guaranteed priority protection while Indeedee’s Psychic surge cannot unless Enamorus Terastalizes. Enamorus Therian Forme again provides excellent anti Dark support and is one of the Trick Room team’s win conditions. While at first glance an odd choice for a Trick Room team, Urshifu Rapid provides invaluable utility, breaking protect moves that could otherwise be used to stall Trick Room out. Enamorus Therian Forme in particular loves Urshifu Rapid for threatening Fire and Steel types with its STABs. Ursaluna is another Trick Room attacker that pairs nicely with Enamorus Therian Forme, its physical offense complimenting Enamorus’ Special and loves Enamorus threatening opposing Grass and Fighting types.

Sludge Bomb is for if you really really hate Flutter Mane, though the super effective coverage on Rillaboom, Ogerpon, and Tera Grass Pokémon cannot be discounted.
Springtide Storm is stronger spread damage, but requires Rain Support to be reliable.

Countering Enamorus Therian Forme

The supreme coverage of Fairy Ground and Fire leaves reliable answers to Enamorus Therian Forme few and far in between. Specially Defensive Moltres is a one of the few that reliable resists all three, and can apply pressure with its STABs, though Calm Mind sets can prove troublesome if they get too many boosts. Sponges like Blissey and Assault Vest Goodra all

If lacking Fire coverage, Corviknight and to a lesser extent Skarmory reliable resist both STABs, and floating Steel types like Gholdengo and Kingambit can switch in safely without risking too much damage.

Double Dance sets are difficult to break when they get setup. Skeledirge dislikes Earth Power, but otherwise reliably muscles through Calm Mind boosts both offensively and defensively. Otherwise, Toxic users are invaluable for placing Enamorus Therian Forme on a timer.

While Enamorus Therian Forme’s bulk is impressive, its reliance on Draining Kiss for recovery is rather exploitable, with many Steel, Poison and Fire type attackers capable of taking on a weakened Enamorus forced to make a hard decision between healing or Koing its target.
