Revavroom

Revavroom the Multi-Cyl Pokémon. It creates a gas out of poison and minerals from rocks. It then detonates the gas in its cylinders- now numbering eight-to generate energy. Revavroom viciously threatens others with the sound of its exhaust. It sticks its tongue out from its cylindrical mouth and sprays toxic fluids.

Overview

The centerpiece of Team Star’s fearsome Starmobiles, Revavroom made an incredible impression on players the world over during their forays into Paldea. Revavroom has much more in the tank besides that starring role. The first Poison Steel type, Revavroom is one of the most anti Fairy Pokémon ever, wielding quad resistance to their STABs and having two STABs to strike down Fairies, regardless of their subtypes. Access to the rare Shift Gear kicks Revavroom’s prowess into high gear, giving it the speed you’d expect a car Pokémon to have and the power to bowl over most targets with its potent STABs, along with the coverage to handle the few that resist both. Getting that boost with Shift Gear is easy too, Revavroom’s Steel subtype providing it a multitude of resistances that make it difficult to scratch its chassis and make the most out of its decent physical bulk.

None of these traits have kept Revavroom in super stardom. While Revavroom’s Speed and Attack are great after Shift Gear, without the boost they are far from impressive, leaving it vulnerable until it sets up. Such vulnerability becomes crippling given Revavroom’s paltry 67 Special Defense and horrible quadruple Ground weakness making it simple to strike Revavroom down. Such achilles heels prevents Revavroom from excelling in defensive roles as well despite the strengths of the Steel typing and its excellent defensive options. Poison Steel, while being somewhat complimentary offensively, has very poor coverage, which in combination with Revavroom’s unimpressive offenses leaves it outclassed by more immediately offensive Poison and Steel types like Iron Moth, Gholdengo, Excadrill and Metagross. While Revavroom’s top gear fails to keep up with the head of the pack, its typing and moveset make it a cool ride.
Positives
Steel Poison offers many resistances enabling Revavroom to tank a wide range of attacks.
Shift Gear is an absurd boosting move turning Revavroom into an absurd cleaning machine with STABs and appropriate coverage.
Fantastic support options in Parting Shot, Toxic Spikes, Haze and Taunt compliment Revavroom’s offensive prowess, giving Revavroom great flexibility.

Negatives
Speed and Attack are unimpressive before Shift Gear, leaving Revavroom reliant on setup to be an offensive threat.
Steel and Poison are poor offensively and Revavroom struggles to fit all the coverage it needs alongside both STABs and Shift Gear.
Crippling quadruple Ground weakness and abysmal Special Defense are noticeable defects that bely its good typing

Shift Gear Revavroom has made a name for its by running over weakened teams in the late game thanks to the efficacy of Shift Gear. The +2 Speed boost from Shift Gear is massive, outspeeding Pokémon as fast as Regieleki and Speed Booster Energy Iron Valiant, leaving scarce few that can naturally outspeed Revavroom post setup. Add on the +1 Attack boost and Revavroom can smash through a wide range of Pokémon, with even defensive staples like Cresselia, Alomomola, and Hippowdon being 2HKO’d by Revavroom’s STABs. Gunk Shot is recommended for the Poison STAB for power, reaching 2HKOs where other moves can’t, though the accuracy can be trying at times. Iron Head is a consistent Steel STAB to offset the unreliability of Gunk Shot and covers most of Poison resists, especially Rock types like Kleavor and Terrakion. Temper Flare is important for coverage against Steel types that resist both STABs, and actively punishes Steel switch ins and Steel Terastalization to block Gunk Shot as well as Gunk Shots unreliable accuracy for triggering its power boost.

Tera Types:
As a game ending sweeper Revavroom often prefers offensive Terastalizations to help reach OHKOs that it would otherwise miss. Tera Poison is tempting for the pure power, helping reach OHKOs on Reuiniclus, Slowbro, and defensive Zapdos, but comes at the cost of removing many of Revavroom’s resistances. Tera Steel is more reliable, bolstering Iron Head up to Gunk Shot’s levels of power while having defensive merit in reducing Revavroom’s onerus Ground weakness. Tera Fire and Ground are also worth considering for bolstering Revavroom’s Temper Flare and High Horsepower to the level of its STABs, ideal for breaking through Steel types that endeavor to stop Revavroom’s sweeps. Tera Flying is the main defensive Terastalization worth mentioning, granting an immunity to Ground while not maintaining Revavroom’s Fire weakness (unlike Tera Grass or Bug), which can be vital in helping Revavroom guarantee setup. Tera Water is a niche option, but provides an offensive option for opposing Ground types while still hitting most Steel types hard, while being a fantastic defensive typing in general.

EVs and Items:
As for many a setup sweeper, Max Speed and Attack are recommended to get the most out of Shift Gear. Adamant Nature is preferred given that after Shift Gear, Revavroom outspeeds everything unboosted and ties with Scarf Inteleon. One can drop some speed investment for more bulk but leaves Revavroom more exposed to Choice Scarf users as a result. 188 Speed EVs with Adamant Nature still outspeeds Scarfed Base 110s like Latios, Gengar, and Hisuian Zoroark. Life Orb is recommended for offering the largest power boost without locking moves. Other than that, items to help guarantee setup are fantastic. Air Balloon prevents a surprise Ground attack from crashing Revavroom before it starts, while Shuca Berry plus Filter will help Revavroom survive most Ground attacks if at full if one can’t reliably preserve Terastalization.

Partners:
Allies that can remove Ground types go a long way in enabling a Revavroom sweep. Shell Smash Torterra is great at this, its Grass typing and high Defense stymying most Ground types while maintaining the level of offense needed to apply continuous pressure that is natural to the teams Shift Gear Revavroom slots in on. Torterra’s ability to handle grounded Steel types is a bonus. Using Electric types like Raikou as lures to deal with the Ground types called upon to block their Electric STAB is another option. Revavroom can’t cover every Steel type without giving up a STAB, so allies to preemptively remove Steel types that Revavroom can’t handle are worth considering. Magnezone is the first Pokémon that comes to mind for Steel type hate, and performs the job well, though the shared Ground weakness is painful.

Other Options:
High Horsepower is Revavroom’s other answer to Steel types, and has its advantages, striking down Hisuian Goodra, Empoleon, Archaludon and Heatran with far greater ease than Temper Flare, but misses out on Floating Steel types like Levitate Bronzong, Corviknight, Skarmory, and any Levitate Tera Steel Pokémon. Poison Jab is a far more reliable Poison STAB option than Gunk Shot, but the loss in power is immense. Toxic is great if Revavroom is unable to KO a target and is about to be KO’d, crippling a would be wall in exchange, but considering the best walls for Revavroom are the Poison immune Steel types reduces Toxic’s effectiveness.

Countering Revavroom

While Revavroom’s strengths as a setup sweeper are fantastic, it also has very clear and defined weaknesses as well.

Steel types are an incredible headache for Revavroom, easily eating both STABs and the wide variety of them makes it impossible to cover all of them with one coverage move. If running Stomping Tantrum, unground Steel types like Levitate Bronzong, Earth Eater Orthworm, Skarmory and Corviknight are impossible foes, their high Defense allowing them to take boosted Iron Head well and outlast or overwhelm Revavroom. If running Temper Flare, Hisuian Goodra, Heatran, and to a lesser extent, Empoleon can reliably face Revavroom and blast it down, though Empoleons low defense can make boosted Temper Flare worrisome. Tera Steel Pokémon also deserve mention, the surprise immunity or resistance often giving said Pokémon an opportunity to survive Revavroom’s STAB and strike it down.

Ground types are near uniformly a problem for Revavroom between their Gunk Shot resistance and high Defense allowing them to tank Iron Head makes it difficult for Revavroom to remove a healthy Ground type before they can demolish it with their own STABs. Hippowdon’s invested physical bulk is excellent at such a role, and Swampert’s and Quagsire’s Water Ground typing mean that both STABs are no go.

Revavroom post setup is aggravating to revenge KO given its resistance to most forms of priority and absurd speed. Scarf Noivern and weather sweepers like Venusaur, Kingdra, and Floatzel in their favored weather can outrun and overwhelm Revavroom.
