Copperajah

Copperajah, The Copperderm Pokémon. They came over from another region long ago and worked together with humans. Their green skin is resistant to water. These Pokémon live in herds. Their trunks have incredible grip strength, strong enough to crush giant rocks into powder. After this Pokémon has Gigantamaxed, its massive nose can utterly demolish large structures with a single smashing blow. So much power is packed within its trunk that if it were to unleash that power, the resulting blast could level mountains and change the landscape.

Overview

After generations of the mysterious Indian Elephant mentioned in Raichu’s and Gastly’s Pokédex entries, we finally have the Indian Elephant Pokémon. And as an elephant, Copperajah does not disappoint. Massive Attack as expected of an Elephant ensures that if Copperajah can land a hit, it will maim the opposition and thanks to its massive HP and Steel typing, it will often live to land that hit. And if that wasn’t enough, Copperajah has a Gigantamax form that sets its own unique Stealth Rock variant, enabling Copperajah to sever as a key player on hazard stacking teams and giving it a bit of variety.

However, Copperajah finds itself falling short at several points. G-Max Steelsurge is cleared away as easily as any other entry hazard, forcing you to save your Dynamax until you have removed your opponent’s Defogger/Rapid Spin user. Poor Speed and Defenses offset its great HP and prevents it from pivoting as often as it would like as it is worn down quickly unless you run the inconsistent Trick Room. Additionally, Copperajah’s consistency further tanks in Dynamax formats, as Dynamax blocks the weight based moves Copperajah loves using and Copperajah itself can’t take advantage of either of its abilities while Dynamaxed.
Positives
Massive 130 Attack and two abilities that can increase the power of its moves enables Copperajah to deal massive damage, even uninvested.
Wide Physical movepool gives Copperajah a myriad of offensive options.
G-Max Steelsurge is a nice addition to hazard stack and synergizes well with Stealth Rock and Whirlwind.
Negatives
Poor Speed and lackluster defenses make Copperajah easy to wear down and revenge KO
G-Max Steelsurge is easy to clear away.

Movesets

Elephazard

-Stealth Rock
-Heavy Slam
-Whirlwind
-Earthquake
Item Attached: Leftovers
Ability: Heavy Metal
EVs and Nature:
252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Careful Nature

Hazard Setting G-Max Copperajah. Setup at the beginning of the match and/or when your opponents Hazard remover has been eliminated, G-Max, setup Steelsurge and just wear down your opponent even quicker. Whirlwind works well with this set, forcing bad switches and phazing away setup attempts while racking up Stealth Rock and Steelsurge damage. Heavy Slam is the strongest STAB move Copperajah has, allowing it to hit hard both in and out of Gigantamax. Thanks to Heavy Metal, Heavy Slam reaches at least 100 Base Power on every Steel weak target bar Stonjourner, Avalugg, and Glasterier. Earthquake rounds out the set with the greatest coverage versus Heavy Slam's resists.

DYNAMAX:
Once you know it is safe to Gigantamax, do so and setup G-Max Steelsurge as quickly as possible. Once that has been accomplished, you can stall out for leftovers recovery with Max Guard, or patch up Copperajah's Special Defense with Max Quake enabling it to survive more hits to Whirlwind the opposition.

EVs and Items:
Maximize bulk as much as possible so that Copperajah can live to setup entry hazards and phaze with Whirlwind. Max HP is recommended for the largest bulk increase while Gigantamaxing, though whether you want to max out your Defense or Special Defense depends on your team's composition. Defense was increased as Copperajah can increase Special Defense on its own while Gigantamaxing. Leftovers is preferred for consistent recovery and keeping Copperajah in the game longer.

Other Options:
Stone Edge/Heat Crash -Copperajah tends to attract Defoggers while setting up Stealth Rocks. This can punish Defoggers who may not fear Copperajah's STAB + Earthquake combo like Zapdos, Skarmory and Celesteela.

Partners:
Araquanid -Furthers the Hazard stacking with Sticky Web and can help lure in your opponent's hazard removers so you can remove them yourself. Additionally pivots into Fighting and Ground attacks and can blank Will-o-Wisp.
Rotom-Heat -Threatens and Eliminates most Defog and Rapid Spin users while pivoting into any Ground, Fire and Electric move and provides a safe slow pivot with Volt Switch.
Vaporeon -Switches into opposing Fire attacks and helps keep Copperajah healthy so it can repeatedly set up Entry Hazards.
Milotic -Switches into opposing Fire attacks and punishes Defog attempts by nabbing a competitive boost.

Heavy InVestment

-Heavy Slam
-Heat Crash
-Power Whip
-Earthquake
Item Attached: Assault Vest
Ability: Heavy Metal
EVs and Nature:
252 Atk / 164 Def / 92 SDef
Adamant Nature

This set improves Copperajah’s bulk with Assault Vest and takes advantage of its astronomical Attack to repeatedly switch in and do massive damage throughout the Battle. Heavy Slam is the STAB of choice, stronger than even Sheer Force Boosted Iron Head against most targets. Heat Crash also runs based on weight and serves as valuable coverage against opposing Steel types. Power Whip punishes Water types who resist Copperajah’s STAB and Ground types who are bulky enough to take a Heavy Slam and strike back with Earthquake. Earthquake rounds out the set, possessing great coverage against Electric and Fire types as well as the synergistic properities of Max Quake with Max Steelstrike.

DYNAMAX:
Copperajah can serve as a bulky Dynamax attacker, able to escalate defensively thanks to the properties of Max Steelstrike and Max Quake complementing each other while leveraging its incredible base HP stat. Power Whip Empowered Max Overgrow further improves Copperajah’s bulk, giving it passive recovery and weakening opposing Earthquakes. Finally Dyanamax does serve as an escape route against opposing Dynamaxers who prevent Heavy Slam and Heat Crash from working.

EVs and Items:
EVs are to max out Attack to hit as hard as possible, while the remaining EVs are dedicated to Special Defense and Defense for survivability.

Other Options:
Stone Edge gives Copperajah an option against Flying and Fire types, but lacks the complete synergy that Max Quake provides.
Super Power -Fighting has great coverage and enables Copperajah to escalate offensviley while Dynamaxed but the stat drops can be counter intuitive for a Tank.
Sheer Force/Iron Head/Play Rough/Rock Slide -Copperajah has enough moves to throw a Sheer Force Life Orb set together. However, it would be missing valuable coverage in Earthquake, Heat Crash and Power Whip. Additionally, Sheer Force Iron Head only reaches a Base Power of 104 before STAB versus Heavy Slam’s near consistent base 120. Only Steel weak targets Sheer Force Iron Head hits harder are Gigalith, Beartic, Terrakion, Tyrantrum, Rhyperior, Mamowswine, Golem, Avalugg, Stonejourner and Glastrier and even up to Golem, only by a narrow margin of 4 Base Power.

Partners:
Vaporeon and Sylveon -Clerics who can keep Copperajah healthy over a match as it is wholly unable to heal itself with Assault Vest while safely switching into Fire and Fighting moves respectively.
Trick Room setters like Exeggutor, Porygon2 setup and can safely Pivot to Copperajah with Teleport.
Claydol easily resists Ground and Fighting moves and can safely pivot Copperajah in with Teleport in addition to providing Hazard Control.

Countering Copperajah

Copperajah is relatively easy to revenge KO. Any strong attacker with a STAB Super Effective move will outspeed and do the job. Arcanine stands out, for being able to wreck Copperajah’s offense with Intimidate and Will-o-Wisp as well as possessing the bulk and recovery to shrug off Copperajah’s coverage moves. Mudsdale and Hippowdon perform similarly, though lacking the ability to hinder Copperajah. Dedicated Physical walls can also blank Copperajah’s assault and hinder or wear it down. Weezing can take a Heavy Slam and Will-o-Wisp and Taunt it to prevent further damage and laying down Entry Hazards, but struggles to do damage. Celesteela also completely walls out Copperajah thanks to its high weight and typing and can easily KO back with Flamethrower.
