Eelektross

Eelektross, the EleFish Pokémon. They crawl out of the ocean using their arms. They will attack prey on shore and immediately drag it into the ocean. It latches on to prey with its sucker mouth, sinking in its fangs and shocking the prey with powerful electricity.

Overview

Eelektross by dint by typing and ability immediately draws attention as the only Pokémon line in the game that has no weaknesses. However, beyond that interesting factoid, Eelektross falls as a middling jack of all trades master of none. Eelektross does have its strong points. Usable offensive stats and an incredibly wide movepool make Eelektross an unpredictable attacker, comfortable at attacking on both sides of the spectrum with numerous options for Ground types that normally stymie Electric attackers. Above average HP with average defenses turns Eelektross rather bulky and synergizes wonderfully with Levitate protecting Eelektross from most entry hazards.

However, for each good point, there is also a bad. Eelektross’ offense falls short with its only usable attacking stats and its stronger Attack only has Wild Charge for viable STAB which does not synergize with its bulk. And while lacking weaknesses is nice, the lack of resistances hurts immensely, limiting pivoting opportunities and what attacks Eelektross can safely take. Only having non-STAB Giga Drain and Drain Punch for recovery further worsens matters, compromising Eelektross’ ability to take damage repeatedly. Eelektross’ pitiful speed is what truly brings it down. Thanks to that horrid speed, offensive sets struggle to apply pressure. Thanks to that horrid speed Eelektross must take attacks before retaliating or recovering, ruining its decent bulk. Eelektross has a lot going for it, but its flaws leave much to be desired over the competition.
Positives
An insane offensive movepool and balanced attacking stats make Eelektross a flexible fighter, able to run Physical, Special and or mixed sets with ease.
Good HP and Defenses alongside draining moves gives Eelektross some decent longevity.
Levitate wipes out Eelektross’ lone weakness and vulnerability to entry hazards, making it easy to fit on teams

Negatives
Poor Base 50 Speed leaves Eelektross on the backfoot and forces it to rely on its bulk more than it wants too.
Pure Electric and Levitate don’t provide many resistances, limiting switch in opportunities
Offenses are lackluster and only has single stage offense boosting moves to make up for it.
Current loss of Knock Off deprives Eelektross of valuable utility.

Movesets

Electric Coil

-Coil
-Drain Punch
-Wild Charge
-Liquidation
Ability: Levitate
Item: Leftovers
EVs and Nature:
252 HP / 252 SDef / 4 Spe
Careful Nature

Physical tank Eelektross aims to repeatedly Coil to wall up and utilize Drain Punch to stay healthy and do so repeatedly. Come in on a Pokémon locked into Ground moves or unable to hit Eelektross and setup safely. Wild Charge is the best Coil boosted STAB Eelektross has access to, despite the recoil being very anti-synergistic with a Tank set. Liquidation rounds out the set as viable coverage for hitting Ground and Rock types both of which tend to have very high Defense to stymie physical attackers.

Tera Types:
Tera Electric is highly recommended: It keeps Eelektross' trait of no weaknesses and enables Tera Blast as a much better STAB over Wild Charge. Tera Steel is an excellent defensive option, giving Eelektross badly needed resistances, and still synergizes well with Levitate and to a lesser extent, Liquidation.

EVs and Items:
Max HP and Special Defense to make Eelektross and overall bulky as possible pre and post setup -Coil will be patching up Attack and Defense. Leftovers provides much needed recovery and reduces the number of times that Eelektross needs to Drain Punch. One could move investment from Special Defense to Defense to better serve as a Physical wall post Coil, but would require another teammate as a dedicated special pivot.

Partners:
Glimmora makes for a good partner -reliable hazard setter to make up for Eelektross' ok attack and appreciates Eelektross pivoting into Ground and Steel moves and having synergistic offenses. Other Rock types like Lycanroc and Clawf also appreciate such synergies as does Qwilfish. Golduck and Clawitzer appreciate Eelektross walling opposing Electric types and offer invaluable Special Offense against many physically bulky Pokémon Eelektross may struggle with.

Other Options:
Dragon Tail -great Phazing tool that prevents Eelektross from being setup fodder and has its accuracy fixed by Coil, while offering Dragon coverage. Eerie Impulse/Light Screen -Helps bolster Eelektross' Special Defense as well and can enable teammates to pivot in safely, though the loss in coverage is painful. Thunderbolt -If you don't want Eelektross tearing itself apart with STAB Wild Charge or lock your Tera Slot to Eelektross and hits many physically defensive Water and Flying types like Qwilfish and Pelipper hard even when uninvested. Rest + Chesto Berry -This set is ruined by status, to anything to clear that is welcome

Amprey

Volt Switch
Giga Drain
Flamethrower
Close Combat
Ability: Levitate
Item: Assault Vest
EVs and Nature:
252 HP /4 Atk / 252 SAtk
Quiet Nature

Bulky Mixed Eelektross applies continuous pressure with its wide coverage, tearing holes into weakened teams while staying alive thanks to its decent bulk bolster by Assault Vest. Volt Switch is an incredible option, doing decent damage thanks to STAB while also offering a safe pivot against most opponents, securing momentum in Eelektross’ favor. Giga Drain provides an invaluable answer to Ground types who might try to block Volt Switch and healing all in one. Flamethrower is namely for the Grass types that wall Thunderbolt and Giga Drain, though its overall excellent coverage is nothing to write off either. Close Combat rounds out the set, being an option to bait and eliminate Chansey, Umbreon and the like.

Tera Types:
Tera Electric is excellent on Eelektross for bolster its STAB while having good baseline defensive merit, while Tera Steel remains the premier defensive option for its wide array of resistances.

EVs and Items:
Max HP and Special Attack for a balance of offense and bulk. Assault Vest enables the set to tick, enabling Eelektross to pivot into many more special attacks than it would normally. Quiet Nature is recommended so you don’t tank your Attack for Close Combat though Mild is worth considering to continue outrunning the few targets Eelektross does like uninvested Lurantis, and Crabominable.

Partners:
Ground types like Krookodile, and Mudsdale make for good partners, striking Electric types that Eelektross can struggle to get past while Eelektross softly checks opposing Water and Grass types. Their physical defensive capabilities also make good pivots with Assault Vest Eelektross’ special bulk.
Other Pokémon that can pivot also make for great partners, able to constantly shift and apply pressure in a VoltTurn strategy. Good examples include Flapple, Flamigo, Primeape, and Rotom.
Setup sweepers also enjoy Eelektross’ ability as a slow pivot to get them safely in for a setup attempt. Veluza, Heracross, and Cloyster are examples of setup sweepers that also enjoy the defensive merits Eelektross provides.
Avalugg and Eiscue deserve mention, as Eelektross struggles against Dragon types with this set, with Avalugg’s Defense and Eiscue’s Ice Face providing nice contrast with Eelektross’ Assault Vest as they form an offensive Electric Ice core.

Other Options:
Charge Beam -Alternative STAB that enables Eelektross to snowball while remaining on the field.
Acid Spray -Alternative to Charge Beam as a coverage option, the Special Defense drop is great at forcing opponents out or taking a KO.
Thunderbolt -Reliable STAB, but it is hard to fit with Volt Switch without losing valuable coverage.

Countering Eelektross

Eelektross is very difficult to outright counter. Its coverage is too wide and sets are too varied to come up with a consistent counter for every one. Dragon types have the best track record, fearing only Dragon Tail while resisting STAB and most coverage options. Appletun fares well against the physical sets while Goodra and Dragalge fare well against Special sets.

Wearing Eelektross down on the other hand is far more viable. It often must take a hit before doing anything and with only Leftovers, and non-STAB draining moves it is possible for Eelektross to be overwhelmed. Physical attackers fare well against both Assault Vest and Coil sets before Coil is setup), often taking out chunks of Eelektross’ HP. Physical sets are especially vulnerable to being Burned as their recovery from Drain Punch is also severely impacted.
