Pawmot, the Hands-On Pokémon. This Pokémon normally is slow to react, but once it enters battle, it will strike down its enemies with lightning-fast movements. Pawmot's fluffy fur acts as a battery. It can store the same amount of electricity as an electric car.
Overview
As sure as the sun rises, with each new generation there is a new Pikachu Clone and Pawmot is the latest iteration in this tradition. And in many ways, arguably the best. Base 105 Speed is great, getting the jump on many a foe. Base 115 Attack at first seems like a let down given Electric’s notorious history with a lack of viable Physical STABs, but Pawmot has got it covered, with its signature Double Shock endlessly spammable after Terastalization and Iron Fist bolstering both Thunder Punch and Ice Punch to respectable levels. STAB Close Combat is always an incredible move to have on hand, leaving Pawmot not wanting in coverage. And this is not even getting into Revival Blessing, whose introduction into Pokémon has incredible tactical potential, from bring back a key piece of your defensive core to reviving an entry hazard setter after the Hazard removers are gone, to reviving a sweeper after its checks are gone for a game ending sweep.
However, Pawmot does have its issues. Poor defenses across the board and Electric Fighting not having much in the way of resistances leave Pawmot rather frail and make it difficult to directly switch in. Being a physical attacker is still rather unfortunate for Pawmot as many of the top Electric and Fighting weak targets all have titanic physical bulk, making it difficult for Pawmot to reach a OHKO which it needs due to its frailty. Having to waste your team’s Terastalization slot on Pawmot for Double Shock to be viable is painful, greatly cutting down on your team’s versatility. Pawmot does have the keys to greatness, but its shortcomings and current environment make it a tricky Pokémon to utilize.
Positives
Base 105 Speed is incredible, getting a jump on many popular Pokémon.
Base 115 Attack with amazing Electric and Fighting STABs alongside Seed Bomb and Iron Fist Ice Punch for coverage and Iron Fish Mach Punch for priority make Pawmot difficult to wall.
Revival Blessing is an absurd move where one or two uses can completely change the course of a battle.
Negatives
Poor 70/70/60 defenses leave Pawmot rather frail and unable to tank many hits.
Electric Fighting has few common resistances making it difficult to switch in safely.
Double Shock requires Terastalization to be used more than once, which prevents flexible use of the mechanic.
Movesets
Miracle Marmot
-Double Shock
-Close Combat
-Ice Punch
-Revival Blessing
Ability: Iron Fist
Item: Life Orb
EVs and Nature:
4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
Pawmot’s signature set balances impressive offense with the unmatched utility of Revival Blessing, allowing it to slot easily on many balanced and offensive teams. Double Shock and Close Combat are incredible STABs, hitting many key threats like Dondozo, Garganacl, Toxapex, Baxcalibur, Corviknight, Chi-Yu, Slowking, Kingambit etc. Though do note that Double Shock does require Terastalization Electric to be used more than once, though the power boost is appreciable. Ice Punch rounds out Pawmot’s coverage, hitting Grass, Ground and Dragon types like Great Tusk, Amoongus and Salamence hard. Revival Blessing rounds out the set, enabling Pawmot to bring back one of its teammates preferably one whose answers are gone to facilitate closing out a battle..
Tera Types:
If Pawmot is running Double Shock, Tera Electric is mandatory. Being able to use a Base 120 Double STAB move without drawback is incredible, reliably 2HKOing even normally bulky targets like Skeledirge. If not running Double Shock, Pawmot’s options do open up. Tera Grass and Tera Flying do give valuable resistance to Ground attacks while removing Pawmot’s Fairy and Psychic weakness, though it is a toss up between if you want a buffed Seed Bomb or straight up immunity to Ground. Tera Ice is also worth consideration, giving a pseudo STAB BoltBeam coverage that leaves Pawmot incredibly difficult to pivot into.
EVs and Items:
Max Speed and Attack to maximize Pawmot’s offensive potential. Max Speed is recommended in general so that Pawmot can get a Revival Blessing off before going down. Life Orb is recommended to give Pawmot the extra power to bust through its targets while maintaining the fantastic flexibility its coverage provides. If you don’t want Pawmot to tear itself apart, Expert Belt is great for capitalizing on Pawmot’s wide coverage, while Magnet pushes Double Shock to a level near Life Orb. Leppa Berry is also a good option, enabling Pawmot to bring back two teammates with Revival Blessing, though the drop in power is significant.
Partners:
Hazard setters like Glimmora, Great Tusk and Ting-Lu work great with Pawmot. Pawmot enjoys the extra chip they provide in reaching KOs with their moves and they in turn value Pawmot for answering some of their biggest checks including Dondozo and the best Entry Hazard remover in Corviknight. This especially pairs well with Revival Blessing, enabling Pawmot to eliminate the hazard remover after they have been KOd and then bring them back to setup hazards uncontested.
Meowscarada, Greninja, and Iron Bundle all work well with Pawmot, readily answering the Ground and Psychic/Grass types that give Pawmot trouble while offering pivoting ability to get Pawmot in. In turn, they make for excellent Revival Blessing Targets, being hit and run masters that can run away with a game once their checks are eliminated.
Other Options:
Bulk Up -If not wanting to run Revival Blessing, Bulk Up is another option, giving Pawmot sorely needed bulk and power to muscle past some of its bulkier targets
Mach Punch -priority for picking off faster targets and/or targets with their own priority is always worth considering.
Thunder Punch -if not running Double Shock, this is Pawmot’s next best bet and reaches appreciable power thanks to Iron Fist.
Seed Bomb -wrecks Ground types and is a good argument for Tera Grass.
VGC & Doubles Options
The Pikaclones may have a spotty VGC history, but they consistently have the tools for success, and Pawmot is no different. With a robust support movepool including Fake Out, Nuzzle, and Encore alongside an extremely potent offensive STAB combination and a high speed to get the jump on most users and it is easy to see why Pawmot has a place in Doubles. And this is even before getting into Revival Blessing which is no less absurd in a Doubles battle. Pawmot’s frailty continues to plague it in doubles. It does not take much to beat it down and it does not have the same world stopping power that other faster sweepers have, which can make Pawmot more of a liability at times.
Doubles Shocker
-Fake Out
-Double Shock
-Close Combat
-Revival Blessing
Ability: Natural Cure
Item: Focus Sash
Tera Type: Focus Sash
EVs and Nature:
4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
Pawmot pulls double duty as offense and support in this doubles set. Fake Out is a staple in double battles for good reasons, stopping setup/disruption before it starts, preventing attackers from taking out a weak teammate and providing chip damage. Double Shock and Close Combat are just as absurd of STAB combination in doubles, hitting Chi-Yu-Ting-Lu, Chien-Pao, Iron Bundle, Dondozo, Tera Normal Dragonite, Palafin, Gyarados, Maushold, etc. Revival Blessing rounds out the set, bringing back a key sweeper like Flutter Mane and Iron Bundle to help close out a match after the opposing team has been weakened.
Natural Cure is preferred to help blank errant Will-O-Wisps and have Pawmot act as a soft absorber of Amoongus’ and Brute Bonnet’s Spore. Focus Sash is recommended for the item. Many of the top threats are faster than Pawmot, so having the ability to guarantee a revive is paramount.
Other Options & Partners:
Mach Punch -damaging priority that hits the many Dark types running around for significant damage.
Encore -ruinous in Double Battles where there are so many moves being used that do nothing or are detrimental if forced to be used again.
Dondozo & Tatsugiri -Pawmot makes for a natural partner for these two, having mutually beneficial typings. Revival Blessing is particularly potent, enabling Pawmot to come back in after Dondozo is taken out, Revive it, and enable a second chance at a Commander Dondozo sweep.
Flutter Mane -enjoys Pawmot answering Kingambit and the many Tera Steel abusers as well as the second chance from Revival Blessing.
Countering Pawmot
Pawmot is rather difficult to deal with defensively. Electric + Fighting STAB with Ice coverage has an absurdly wide range and many of the best Physical Walls are weak to Pawmot’s STABs without Terastalizing. Defensive Great Tusk is probably the closest to a reliable Pawmot check, only being 3KO’d by Close Combat/Iron Fist Ice Punch and having a Guaranteed OHKO with Earthquake. Amoongus gets close, being able to pivot into anything but Ice Punch and still having enough health to eat an Ice Punch and Sleep Pawmot, but it must be healthy and lacks the power to OHKO back.
What is far easier is checking Pawmot offensively. While its speed is good, there are many faster threats that can OHKO Pawmot if they can get in safely. Gengar, Espeon, Maushold, Iron Moth, Meowscarada, Roaring Moon, Chien-Pao, Dragapult etc. all easily outspeed and either maim or outright OHKO Pawmot which also is the best way to stop Revival Blessing as well.
