2009 Series

The 2009 VGC World Championship Series was the first ever World Championship series, following the Showdown that existed in 2008. This series ran on Pokémon Platinum and utilised the full National Pokédex of the time. The World Championships were held in San Diego in the United States.

Battle Type: Double Battle
Pokémon Restrictions: National Pokédex.
Banned Pokémon: Mewtwo, Mew, Lugia, Ho-Oh, Celebi, Kyogre, Groudon, Rayquaza, Jirachi, Deoxys, Dialga, Palkia, Giratina, Phione, Manaphy, Darkrai, Shaymin, Arceus
Clauses: No same Pokémon, No same item

Regionals Details

Regional Championships are set up across the world, mostly in North America, to provide small competitions that allow for players to increase their score in order to get a better chance at going to Worlds. There are a number of Regional competitions each year and they all follow the standard format. They often have side events for all players.

Nationals Details

National Championships are where the best players in the respective country or area come to compete. No points were required to enter but the winners were able to earn placement in the World Championships. The winners in areas outside of the US will often receive travel awards for the World Championships.

Worlds Details

The World Championships are where the best of the world come to participate and fight it off to become World Champion. Participation in the events is by invitation based on score and position, but people could gain entry in the Last Chance Qualifiers.
