Feraligatr

Feraligatr, the Big Jaw Pokémon. When it bites with its massive and powerful jaws, it shakes its head and savagely tears its victim up. Although it has a massive body, its powerful hind legs enable it to move quickly, even on land. It usually moves slowly, but it goes at blinding speed when it attacks and bites prey.

Overview

The last of the Z-A starters and one of the more unexpected given Feraligatr has had some competitive success over the years as a terrifying setup sweeper. While this may be odd when looking at Feraligatr’s unimpressive base 105 Attack, Feraligatr’s Sheer Force more than makes up for the power discrepancy, providing an inbuilt boost to not only its favored STAB in Liquidation, but coverage moves like Crunch and Ice Punch. Add in either Dragon Dance to boost both Feraligatr’s Attack and Speed or Swords Dance for a truly explosive power increase alongside Aqua Jet for priority and there are few issues with Feraligatr’s offense. Feraligatr has no issues getting the boost either. Pure Water typing has always been solid defensively and with 85/100 physical bulk Feraligatr can certainly stand to tank a physical hit or two.

Feraligatr still has its issues. Sheer Force’s greatest boon was the fact that impacted moves ignore the recoil of Life Orb, allowing for some truly insane damage multiplication without any drawback, an option currently not available due to Champions gutting of the item pool. Furthermore, while Feraligatr’s Defense is good for an offensive Pokémon, the same cannot be said about Feraligatr’s Special Defense having it be easily felled by any super effective Special Attack as well as more Specially oriented Mega Evolutions. This gets worse when one considers how underwhelming Feraligatr’s base speed is. While Feraligatr does have plenty of options to address its speed, it is rather exposed when not using said options. Yet these issues don’t compare to Feraligatr’s biggest issue in that Gyarados largely does Feraligatr’s job better. With the Flying subtyping, excellent Special Defense and perhaps Intimidate, Gyarados is far more reliable at setting up Dragon Dance. While Feraligatr does take the edge in initial offense with its Sheer Force boosted attacks, Gyarados still outclasses Feraligatr as a sweeper due to Moxie allowing Gyarados to escalate while applying offensive pressure, something Feraligatr cannot replicate. Even Aqua Jet, the one thing Feraligatr has over Gyarados isn’t safe as that is better done by Basculegion, whether it be Adaptability or better synergy in Rain. Feraligatr is still the best of the base Z-A starters by a wide margin, but with how heavily it is outclassed by other physical Water attackers makes this gator better off left along.
Positives
Base 105 Attack backed by Sheer Force allows Feraligatr to hit surprisingly hard.
Incredible boosting options in Dragon Dance and Swords Dance allow Feraligatr to mow down entire teams.
Base 85 HP and 100 Defense with pure Water typing gives Feraligatr respectable physical bulk, greatly easing setup.

Negatives
Base 78 Speed is unimpressive without boosting, leaving Feraligatr exposed while setting up and against Water resistant targets.
Base 83 Special Defense is a notable weak point, preventing Feraligatr from tanking many special hits.
Loss of Life Orb impacts power.
Outclassed by Gyarados in just about everything it does.

EVs and Nature:

Adamant Nature

Swords Dance Feraligatr goes all in on offense, pushing its Attack stat to the limit before running over everything in its path. Come in on physically offensive foes like Scizor, Tyranitar, and Corviknight, and take advantage of Feraligatr’s good physical bulk to setup and then go on the offensive. Aqua Jet, while not being boosted by Sheer Force, is a vital STAB move thanks to its priority, remedying Feraligatr’s low speed. While its power is somewhat suspect, Swords Dance does a lot to remedy it, allowing Feraligatr to pick off fast frail Megas like Mega Aerodactyl, Mega Delphox, Mega Alakazam from full as well as other fast attackers like Mega Gengar, Mega Lucario and Mega Lopunny from the 60-70% range. Ice Punch is vital coverage into common Water resists like Dragonite, Hydreigon, and Mega Meganium preventing them from coming in freely on an Aqua Jet, while getting the Sheer Force Boost and making it a more viable for muscling through bulky Grass types. Crunch further expands Feraligatr’s coverage, hitting part Water Psychic and Ghost types like Basculegion, (Mega) Starmie, (Mega) Slowbro, that otherwise resist Feraligatr’s STAB and Ice Punch.

EVs and Items:
As a sweeper one wants to invest all EVs into Attack and Speed for as much power as possible. Attack is self evident as one wants Feraligatr to do as much damage as possible. Foregoing investment in speed is not recommended as Feraligatr outsped by just about everything, including invested Kingambit and Primarina, Pelipper, Scizor, Mega Heracross and Blastoise. Adamant nature is recommended for the extra punch that gives to Feraligatr’s Aqua Jet, allowing Feraligatr to reach knockouts with Aqua Jet it may otherwise miss. If running Dragon Dance, Jolly is far more recommended, as at +1 allows Feraligatr to outspeed Jolly/Timid Dragapult, the fastest non-Mega, while dropping down to Adamant means that Feraligatr can no longer outspeed base 130s like Aerodactyl, and Mega Gengar, to say nothing of Mega Delphox, Mega Lopunny and Mega Manetric. Mystic Water is recommended for the extra boost in power it gives Aqua Jet to make it as effective a clean up tool as possible. Otherwise, Sitrus Berry is a good option for easing setup, allowing Feraligatr to take a big hit while setting up and not be exposed to faster priority thereafter.

Partners:
Feraligatr has no direct coverage for Water types so allies that can threaten them are invaluable. Mega Meganium and Mega Venusaur are prime examples, thanks to their ability to absorb Water STABs and fire off powerful Grass attacks to take out such targets quickly. Mega Meganium deals better with Dragon types thanks to its Fair subtyping, making it easier to drop Ice Punch. Mega Venusaur on the otherhand is more reliable, with its Thick Fat invalidating the Ice Beam many Grass types run on top of packing Sludge Bomb for opposing Grass types that Feraligatr rather not deal with. Bellibolt can also work as a defensive Electric type better able to handle opposing Gyarados while crippling targets with Thunder Wave and Toxic making it easier for Feraligatr to apply offensive pressure.

Other Options:
Dragon Dance is an alternative boosting option, sacrificing some sheer force for extra Speed that allows Feraligatr to more reliably apply offensive pressure. Liquidation is Sheer Force boosted STAB and Feraligatr’s best damaging option but is hard to fit on the Swords Dance set without sacrificing either priority (Aqua Jet) or coverage (Ice Punch). Flip Turn is a STAB pivoting move but hard to justify on boosting sets. Superpower is Feraligatr’s best option into Water Dark types like Mega Gyarados, and Hisuian-Samurott though the Attack drop sabotages all of Feraligatr’s hard work boosting. Earthquake is a powerful neutral option that few opposing Water types resist, but pales in comparison to Crunch due to the lack of Sheer Force boost..

Countering Feraligatr

While Feraligatr possesses fierce offense, its limited coverage, unimpressive speed and lacking special defense all offer points to wrangle this croc. Water types give Feraligatr consistent issues, given their resistance to its Water STABs and Ice Punch. Dark resistant Water types especially so given Crunch is less effective against them as well. Water Fairy types like Primarina and Azumarill are bulky enough to tank even boosted attacks and threaten back with their own neutral STAB, and both possessing Encore to punish any setup attempts. Mega Gyarados also can fulfill this role though must be fearful of Superpower. Hisuian-Samurott while on the frail side to the point it can be 2HKO’d by +1 Mystic Water Liquidation, can also 2HKO through Knock Off + Ceaseless Edge. Mega Blastoise can be bulky enough to eat a +2 Crunch or Liquidation, Shell Smash and OHKO with Dark Pulse or Aura Sphere, but since it speed ties Feraligatr, if it wins the speed tie on the Shell Smash turn, the Defense drop is enough that +2 Crunch can OHKO and +2 Crunch into Aqua Jet will KO. Rotom-Wash also comfortably tanks boosted attacks while naturally outspeeding and threatening an OHKO with Thunderbolt. Toxapex fears only Earthquake, and a lesser extent +2 Crunch while being able to wipe away boosts with Haze and placing Feraligatr on a timer with Toxic.

If lacking Ice Punch, Mega Meganium also works well thanks to resisting both Water STAB and Crunch while threatening an immediate OHKO with Solar Beam. Mega Venusaur doesn’t even fear Ice Punch thanks to Thick Fat and is generally bulky enough to stomach even Swords Dance boosted blows with ease while almost OHKOing with Giga Drain.

Physically sturdy walls can also do a lot to stymie Feraligatr in its tracks, though these sets tend to be more exposed to the Swords Dance variant. Archaludon, while 2HKO’d by Swords Dance boosted Feraligatr, can OHKO in return with Draco Meteor, cripple with Thunder Wave or even pHaze Feraligatr out with Dragon Tail. Iron Defense Corviknight can out boost Dragoon Dance Feraligatr and crush it with boosted Body Presses. Mega Aggron is durable enough to eat +1 Liquidations with ease, though its Body Presses will only 3HKO if Defense is uninvested.

Offensively checking Feraligatr in theory is simple given its mediocre Speed and low Special Defense, but this is complicated by Dragon Dance making Feraligatr hard to outspeed and Aqua Jet mandating such checks not be excessively frail or weak to Water. Naturally faster Choice Scarf users immediately come to mind, but of common Scarf users only Meowscarada comes to mind for being able to reliably OHKO Feraligatr, with other users like Garchomp, needing Feraligatr to be down to half for the reliable knockout. Mega Alakazam and Mega Aerodactyl do outspeed Dragon Dance Feraligatr, but neither like eating a +2 Aqua Jet and need Feraligatr down to 75% to reliably knock it out. Hydreigon, (Mega) Dragonite, and (Mega) Starmie do well against Swords Dance sets thanks to their not fearing Aqua Jet and are good at picking off a weakened Feraligatr.

Feraligatr only starts getting dangerous once it has a boost under its belt. Punishing the setup turn with Encore, Will-O-Wisp, Thunder Wave or outright denying it with Taunt from Pokémon like Gyarados, Mimikyu, and Gardevoir make it that much easier to handle.

It should be noted that Mega Victreebel places Feraligatr in a vicious catch-22 where either Feraligatr all but knocks itself out removing Mega Victreebel or Mega Victreebel removing Feraligatr with Giga Drain and recovering most of the damage Feraligatr dealt.

Mega Corner

Mega Feraligatr, the Double Jaw Pokémon. With its arms and hoodlike fin, this Pokémon forms a gigantic set of jaws with a bite 10 times as powerful as Mega Feraligatr's actual jaws.

Overview

While Mega Feraligatr’s design may be a silly looking Kamen Rider reference, it does not change the opportunity to break out of Gyarados’ shadow that it provides base Feraligatr. While base Feraligatr was already a terrifying sweeper, Mega Feraligatr takes this to a whole new level. Water Dragon is one of the best typings in the game with a STAB combination that is difficult to resist and very few exploitable weaknesses. Already a terrifying prospect given Mega Feraligatr’s base 160 Attack, but it goes even beyond that. While other physical offensive Dragon types must deal with the exploitable Outrage, inconsistent Scale Shot or the underwhelming Dragon Claw, Mega Feraligatr’s Dragonize solves this issue nicely. Turning Normal moves into Dragon type and giving them a power boost turns Double Edge into an obscenely brutal attack, allowing Mega Feraligatr to fire off a Dragon STAB stronger than Draco Meteor turn after turn. Add in already strong Water STAB to handle most Fairy and Steel types and Mega Feraligatr pushes the definition of unstoppable. Add in Dragon Dance to have Mega Feraligatr hit even harder and an impressive base 125 Defense that greatly facilitates setup, and Mega Feraligatr is a strong contender for one of the best Dragon Dance sweepers in the series. <.p>

Yet despite the new typing and increased power, Mega Feraligatr cannot escape the problems that plagued its base form. Mega Feraligatr’s speed is unchanged from its base form, all but mandating Dragon Dance or Aqua Jet to make up the difference. Furthermore, while Mega Feraligatr’s good defense received a great boost, its weaker Special Defense, while slightly better, remains as exploitable as ever. Despite focusing on Dragon STAB instead of its Water STAB and Sheer Force boosted attacks, Mega Feraligatr is just as stymied by the Water Fairy types that walled its base form. These same Water Fairy types also wall out Mega Feraligatr’s biggest competition in Mega Gyarados who fulfills a similar niche, exchanging out power for overall better bulk and speed, and having a better base form. Despite these problems, Mega Feraligatr doubles down on its strengths for an overwhelming engine of destruction that must be respected, lest it trap its foes in a death roll.
Positives
Base 160 Attack goes into superlative defying levels of power ensuring any physical attack from Mega Feraligatr has horrendous power.
Water Dragon STAB combination is fantastic and further fueled by Dragonize, giving Mega Feraligatr excellent physical STAB options for a very spammable type.
Base 125 Defense is quite significant, greatly easing Mega Feraligatr’s entry points and setup without much issue.

Negatives
Base 78 Speed is unimpressive without boosting, leaving Mega Feraligatr exposed while setting up.
Base 93 Special Defense is a notable weak point, preventing Mega Feraligatr from tanking many special hits.
Water Dragon, while possessing few weaknesses, also possesses few resistances, forcing Mega Feraligatr to lean on its bulk..

Movesets

Dragonize Dance

-Dragon Dance
-Double-Edge
-Liquidation
-Aqua Jet
Ability: Sheer Force -> Dragonize
Item: Feraligite
EVs and Nature:
4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature

Dragon Dance fits perfectly with Mega Feraligatr, pushing its absurd power to new heights while addressing its initially lacking speed. With Mega Feraligatr’s good physical bulk, it has no difficulty finding targets to safely setup upon before starting to attack. Double-Edge is Mega Feraligatr’s primary STAB thanks to the absurdly wide neutral coverage of Dragon, making it easy to throw at just about everything. Factoring in the power bonus from Dragonize, Double-Edge sits at a whopping base 144 power before STAB, leaving only the sturdiest of walls, Steel and Fairy types as safe recourse. Liquidation comes in as secondary STAB, namely for those Steel and Fairy types, further lessening the pool that can safely stomach Mega Feraligatr’s blows while being a strong option for bulky Ground and Rock types like Hippowdown, and Tyranitar meaning that Mega Feraligatr does not always have to incur recoil from its main STAB to make progress. The last move slot is largely up to what corner cases one wants to cover. Aqua Jet is a great clean up tool, handling the few threats that still outspeed Mega Feraligatr after a Dragon Dance like Mega Aerodactyl and Mega Alakazam as well as dealing with opposing priority like Kingambit’s Sucker Punch.

EVs and Items:
Standard attacker EV array of max Speed and Attack for Mega Feraligatr to outspeed as many targets as possible and deal as much damage as possible. Jolly is recommended for the nature, as at +1 allows Mega Feraligatr to outspeed Jolly/Timid Dragapult, the fastest non-Mega, while dropping down to Adamant means that Feraligatr can no longer outspeed base 130s like Aerodactyl, and Mega Gengar, to say nothing of Mega Delphox, Mega Lopunny and Mega Manetric opening up Mega Feraligatr to a lot of unnecessary damage. One could in theory sacrifice Attack investment for HP, allowing Mega Feraligatr to more reliably setup or survive lethal blows. 68 HP EVs for instance allows Mega Feraligatr to survive an uninvested Primarina’s Moonblast and with the remaining attack 2HKO back with a +1 Earthquake through Leftovers. As a Mega Evolution, Mega Feraligatr’s item is locked to the Feraligite.

Partners:
As Fairy types are the biggest obstacle for Mega Feraligatr crushing everything with its Dragonize empowered STABs, allies that handle them are invaluable in enabling Mega Feraligatr. Poison types are especially preferred given the Mega Feraligatr’s biggest issues are with the Steel neutral Water Fairy types. Sneasler immediately comes to mind given its great speed outrunning even Mega Floette, while Dire Claw status spreading is fantastic at facilitating Dragon Dance setup even if Sneasler misses the OHKO. Sneasler’s Fighting STAB makes it great into Steel types as well, further reducing the safe switch ins for Mega Feraligatr. Gengar and Glimmora can fulfill much of the same role, though run into issues with Calm Mind variants of Primarina and Mega Floette. However they make up for that hiccup with their ability to spread status and setup hazards, making it that much easier for Mega Feraligatr to setup and grab knock outs of its own. For Steel typed supporters, Excadrill stands out thanks to its ability to threaten opposing Steel types with Earthquake while drawing in Fire and Water typed attackers that Mega Feraligatr gleefully pivots in on. Scizor also deserves some mention thanks to its Bullet Punch cleaning up weakened foes on top of drawing in Fire types that it can slow U-Turn out into Mega Feraligatr.

Other Options:
Body Slam is the next strongest alternative to Double-Edge for Dragonize STAB that doesn’t tear Mega Feraligatr apart and with a handy Paralysis rider for Speed control to boot. Facade is an alternative Dragonize STAB option for use as insurance against Mega Feraligatr getting burned, but is admittedly of little help against Mimikyu a common Burn spreader due to its Fairy typing. Earthquake is Mega Feraligatr’s best option into opposing Water Fairy types like Primarina and Azumarill. Ice Punch is Mega Feraligatr’s only option to deal with Mega Meganium who otherwise stops Mega Feraligatr’s sweep cold.

Doubles and VGC Options

Mega Feraligatr funnily enough runs into many of the same issues as Mega Emboar in Doubles. An awkward base speed all but mandates speed control for Mega Feraligatr to be truly threatening, whether that be Trick Room, Tailwind of Dragon Dance and can still be outsped regardless of options. Furthermore, while Mega Feraligatr’s Defense is fantastic, its lacking Special Defense is even more exploitable given how there isn’t a Special equivalent for Intimidate. What hurts even more for Mega Feraligatr is an extremely hostile metagame for it. Mega Floette is the most popular Mega Evolution around and with its higher base Speed crushes Mega Feraligatr while Mega Feraligatr needs a boost to do the same to Mega Floette. As a physical attacker, Mega Feraligatr must deal with the innumerable ways of dealing with physical attackers, whether it be one of the many Intimidate users, or even Mega Scolvillain’s Spicy Spray slashing Mega Feraligatr’s Attack left and right. Furthermore, there are no lack of physical Water or Dragon types running around such as Mega Starmie, and non Mega options in Garchomp, Basculegion and Gyarados that fulfill many of the same niches and results that Mega Feraligatr does without such a high opportunity cost. If one can navigate the speed and bulk issues, Mega Feraligatr does indeed deliver, with entire teams vanishing within Mega Feraligatr’s maw. While unlikely to be a staple, Mega Feraligatr is a win condition all the same and must be respected as such.

Double Jaws

-Double Edge
-Liquidation
-Aqua Jet
-Protect
Ability: Sheer Force -> Dragonize
Item: Feraligite
EVs and Nature:
252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SDef
Adamant Nature

Doubles Mega Feraligatr set meant to make the most of its insane power. Dragonize Double Edge is absurd, dealing 69-80% to bulky Rotom-Wash, 75-90% to offensive Archaludon and outright OHKOing offensive Venusaur, leaving very little recourse to what can endure such a blow. Liquidation is secondary STAB and prevents Fairy and Steel types from safely walling off Feraligatr's assault while being good into Water weak support pieces and attackers like Incineroar, Talonflame and Aerodactyl allowing Mega Feraligator to conserve its health against such foes. Aqua Jet is priority and excellent for picking off weakened targets, especially those brought down to Focus Sash on top of outright remove Water weak ones like Mega Delphox, and Mega Aerodactyl. Protect is the doubles staple.

Given EVs are for Mega Feraligatr to get the most out of its offense and bulk while excelling in both Tailwind and Trick Room. Mega Feraligatr's base speed is enough that Tailwind allows it to outrun neutral Dragapult, while Speed positive Dragapult would require 68 Speed EVs to outrun with an Adamant nature. If looking to outrun opposing Choice Scarfers like Garchomp in Tailwind, 140 Speed EVs with a Jolly nature is the minimum to do so, but at that point, one may wish to drop the Trick Room aspect.

Preferred Partners & Other Options:
Speed control options are invaluable for any Mega Feraligatr not running Dragon Dance and still good for those that are. For Tailwind setters, Talonflame and Whimsicott immediately come to mind, each forming a solid defensive core with Mega Feraligator. Talonflame is valued for its ability to threaten opposing Mega Meganium and Whimsicott with its STABs on top of denying opposing Incineroar and Sneasler's Fake Outs with its Quick Guard. Conversely, Whimsicott can punish setup sweepers or Pokémon that have just used Protect with Encore, shield Mega Feraligatr's weaker Special Defense with Light Screen and does better into Primarina and Azumarill. As for Trick Room setters, Sinistcha is undoubtedly the best, its Hospitality keeping Mega Feraligatr healthy in the face of its own Double Edge recoil as well as Rage Powder support drawing Fairy and Dragon attacks away. Anti Intimidate measures should also be considered, so that Mega Feraligatr can do its job of dealing obscene damage. Kingambit with its Defiant is enough to make most trainers think twice about bringing their Intimidate users, while Coaching Sneasler can make Mega Feraligatr untouchable on the physical side while reverting an Intimidate drop. Both options also possess super effective STABs for Fairy types, further enabling Mega Feraligatr Dragon offense. Dragon Dance gives Mega Feraligatr an option to boost its own Speed and counteract Intimidate from Incineroar or Gyarados. Facade is great in matchups against Mega Scovillain, allowing Mega Feraligatr to act almost unimpeded despite the Burn.

Countering Mega Feraligatr

While Mega Feraligatr’s offense brings utterly absurd levels of power, if one can get past that, Mega Feraligatr is rather manageable.

First and foremost, any Fairy types should be considered for Mega Feraligatr given its reliance on its Dragonize boosted attacks for damage. Water resistant Fairy types especially are king, with Mega Feraligatr outright lacking direct coverage for Primarina and Azumarill and almost never running Ice Punch for Mega Meganium. Azumarill and Primarina must be wary of Earthquake, given how after a Dragon Dance boost solidly 2HKOs both. Bulky Alolan-Ninetails will survive a +1 Liquidation thanks to Snow’s Defense boost, and will KO Mega Feraligatr after some chip damage, on top of being able to punish Dragon Dance turns with Encore or setup Aurora Veil to prevent Mega Feraligatr from getting OHKOs of its own. Scarf Gardevoir also outspeeds Mega Feraligatr even after a Dragon Dance and OHKOs with Moonblast, though it cannot tank a Liquidation. Mimikyu also works well, able to outright cripple Mega Feraligatr with Will-O-Wisp while guaranteed to survive one Liquidation with Disguise on top of not worrying about Dragonize Facade thanks to its Fairy typing.

As for other physical walls, Mega Aggron works, only being 2HKOd by +1 Earthquake, and capable of outpacing Mega Feraligatr with Iron Defense, though Mega Feraligatr’s bulk does ensure that not even +2 Body Press can OHKO from full which can leave Mega Aggron in a sorry state. IronPress Corviknight and Skarmory also work, outmatching Mega Feraligatr’s boosts with their own Iron Defenses, though they cannot switch in freely given they are 2HKOd by +1 Liquidation.

As for more offensive checks, Mega Feraligatr is rather difficult to outspeed after a boost, and even naturally faster checks must be wary of the possibility of Aqua Jet. If lacking Aqua Jet, Mega Alakazam does outspeed but can only deal around 63-75% to Mega Feraligatr with Psychic, while Mega Aerodactyle can only get a knock out when Mega Feraligatr is at half. Scarf Garchomp and Scarf Hydreigon both outspeed Mega Feraligatr after a single Dragon Dance, with the former OHKOing with Outrage and the latter with Draco Meteor. If able to catch Mega Feraligatr before it Dragon Dances, it is much easier to outspeed and if not KO than seriously maim.

It should be noted that getting the OHKO on Mega Feraligatr isn’t strictly necessary, as it will be ripping its own health to shreds with Dragonize Double-Edge, while dropping down to Body Slam causes Mega Feraligatr to miss all sorts of OHKOs and expose itself to more damage.
