Ditto

Ditto, the Transform Pokémon. Its transformation ability is perfect. However, if made to laugh, it can't maintain its disguise. It can freely recombine its own cellular structure to transform into other life-forms.

Overview

The original gimmick Pokémon, Ditto’s simplistic design is only matched by the difficulty in its execution. Through Transform, Ditto can become any Pokémon it faces and with its signature ability Imposter, can do so right away without having to waste a turn to Transform. As a result, Ditto is the most volatile Pokémon out there, with its power entirely dependent on your opponent which may result in Ditto lacking the tools to beat its transformed target. That is not to say Imposter doesn’t have its merits. When Ditto Transforms, it copies the current stat changes of its transformed targets stealing any boosts they may have set up. Imposter also transforms without using PP and almost always grants Ditto 5 PP of its target’s moves which can be abused with smart pivoting.

This does not change the fact that Ditto is nothing without Imposter, so the fact it can be blocked by Substitute and Illusion is nightmarish. Base 48 stats across the board are abysmal, making Ditto laughably easy to knock out in its natural state and simple to outspeed while doing so. That poor base 48 HP is also quite damaging, meaning Ditto is often frailer than whatever it is turning into, being effectively a cheap knock off that can’t stomach hits nearly as well. Even transformed Ditto’s issues continue. As it copies its target’s stats perfectly, unless it is wielding a Choice Scarf, any game with Ditto becomes a luck-based roulette praying that Ditto wins the speed tie. Ditto being any Pokémon is also a key weakness, making it difficult to build synergies around Ditto as opposed to more conventional Pokémon as what Ditto’s role is completely deterministic on what is out at the moment. Terastalization also messes with Ditto severely, allowing its transformed target to potentially counter its base self while Ditto struggles to do the same with how it cannot plan for the perfect Tera type the same way its opponent can. This generation has also been rough on Ditto given the influx of excellent Unaware walls that have been added who cover a similar primary niche against setup sweepers. In the end, Ditto’s strength is your opponent’s strength for both better and worse. Whether that leads to Ditto triumph or failure is on its trainer’s ability to adapt.
Positives
Imposter is an amazing ability, copying the opposing Pokémon perfectly and use their strengths against them.
Ditto can become any Pokémon!

Negatives
Ditto can become any Pokémon! …and that’s it.
Stats when not transformed are abysmal, making Ditto easy to remove.
Even when transformed, base HP remains low at a pitiful base 48, making Ditto often frailer than whatever it is copying.
Speed is matched unless running Choice Scarf, turning any battles with Ditto into a luck-based affair.

Ditto is by no means a good Pokémon, being incredibly inconsistent on a game to game, if not moment to moment basis. However, Scarf Ditto has one important niche for which it is famed that few other Pokémon can match. That as counter to setup sweepers, copying their boosts, always outspeeding thanks to Choice Scarf, and removing the boosted threat. Against more offensive teams, this can be game ending, especially if your opponent has nothing on their team to handle their own boosted threat. Even if the opposing team does have an answer to their own boosted sweeper, Ditto still has come out ahead since it just stopped what would have been a battle ending push. While that is Ditto’s most prominent role, Ditto can also be an invaluable tool against stall teams. Come in on an opponent’s Chansey or Blissey, copy their Heal Bell and cleanse all your statused Pokémon, setting your opponent back several steps. Copy a Regenerator Pokémon to keep Ditto healthy as you pivot in and out. While requiring good judgement to use and mandating hazard control, Ditto is invaluable in these matchups. Thanks to the fact that it gets 5 PP of every move its target has (barring exceptions like Revival Blessing) every time it switches in, allowing Ditto to PP stall the opponent. Considering the nerf to recovery moves’ PP in the ninth generation, this has become even more potent than in past generations.

Tera Types:
Generally one never wants to Terastalize Ditto. Part of the reason for that is that you never know what Ditto is going to turn into, so it is entirely possible to get saddled with a Tera Type that Ditto cannot make use of in its current state. Furthermore, regardless of how one is using Ditto, it generally isn’t sticking around, either using its target’s boosted stats to grab a knockout, or perform some clerical duties before pivoting out. Considering all of this, the best tera types for Ditto are generically good defensive ones like Tera Fairy, Water or Steel that provide many resistances and few weaknesses.

EVs and Items:
Max HP investment is generally a given on any Ditto, as that is the only stat of Ditto’s that transfers over when it transforms, thus helping make the transformed Ditto as bulky as possible. Speed investment is recommended on the rare instances when Imposter fails, allowing Ditto to attempt to outspeed and Transform into the target. If looking to copy a Pokémon with Future Sight, Special Attack investment with a boosting nature is recommended as that runs off Ditto’s Special Attack, not the Pokémon it is transformed into. Defense boosting natures like Impish are also an option on the rare chance one gets into a Ditto vs Ditto matchup, allowing the bulkier Ditto to more consistently come out on top. Choice Scarf is all but mandatory as the item, as that is the only way Ditto can consistently win Speed ties against its target (provided they aren’t wielding a Choice Scarf of their own). Focus Sash could be seen as an alternative option allowing Ditto to survive one attack regardless of the Speed tie, but that mandates good hazard control on top of leaving a lot up to luck. Also do not use Ditto’s signature items Metal Powder or Quick Powder. They only take effect while Ditto is itself and do not carry over to its transformed state, doing effectively nothing in most instances and in the instances where they do take effect, Ditto is in deep trouble to begin with.

Partners:
: With Ditto’s talents excelling against setup sweepers and certain stall staples alike, it is of little surprise that it finds a niche on stall teams as a flexible catch all answer to whatever Ditto’s teammates can’t cover. Alomomola loves Ditto’s ability to excel against the setup sweepers that Alomomola tends to invite in while Ditto loves Alomomola’s Wishes keeping it healthy in matchups against bulkier teams. Other walls that can’t effectively threaten setup sweepers like Blissey and Corviknight also appreciate Ditto’s anti setup sweeper purposes.

Doubles and VGC Options

Ditto’s performance is even more unstable in Doubles than in Singles, though that is how Ditto likes it. Ditto is at its peak in formats where there are one or two massively overpowered threats that near everyone is running that are leagues ahead of everything else. If that is the case, Ditto can shine by giving you access to that overpowered threat for free, allowing you to run two at once for very little opportunity cost. Fortunately for Ditto, VGC tends to generate such conditions with its double and especially single restricted formats. In single restricted formats, the opposing team’s restricted Pokémon is often their win condition, so being able to copy that win condition in addition to your own gives you a massive leg up over your opponent, in addition to enabling more unorthodox Restricted Pokémon with powerful niches like Ho-oh or Eternatus that are otherwise hard to justify. Getting Ditto into such a position is easier said than done. In Doubles, Imposter copies the Pokémon Ditto is directly facing, meaning opening with Ditto is gambling on whether you copy a viable target for Ditto. Even when keeping Ditto in the back, its poor base HP even when transformed makes pivoting in directly risky and when coming in after a knockout, there is no guarantee that the knocked out slot is facing a viable Transform target. Furthermore, Choice Scarf, the item Ditto is dependent on for winning Speed ties can be quite the liability in VGC, being actively punished by Trick Room, or having Ditto’s locked move easily scouted with Protect, blocked with Wide Guard, etc. Thanks to the prevalence of Protect and status moves in general, even offensive Pokémon often don’t have as robust coverage as they would in Singles.

Ditto’s role in Doubles is far more offensive than its role in Singles, copying powerful offensive Pokémon and turning their own power against them. This is especially effective in the face of boosting threats like Zacian-Crowned and Zamazenta-Crowned where Ditto will get their boosts and then benefit from their respective abilities for another boost, swinging the matchup into Ditto’s favor. While boosting threats are uncommon in VGC, they aren’t unheard of, and Pokémon like Calyrex-Shadow Rider can easily get reversed swept if Ditto copies their own boosts. Ditto also excels against weather based attackers like Venusaur, Hisuian-Lilligant, Flutter Mane, Basculegion and Overqwil, getting the same ability against such target and matching their speed when such Pokémon excel by being very difficult to outspeed. While one can copy and get mileage out of defensive set pieces like opposing Incineroar, Ditto’s poor base HP means it lacks the bulk that such targets normally have and is easy to remove without contributing much.

Max HP as always is a must being that is the only stat of Ditto’s that matters. Max Speed is for the uncommon occurrence where Imposter fails and Ditto needs to Transform as quickly as possible. While Ditto is never a primary Terastalization target, if one must Terastalize Ditto, Tera Stellar is great in fitting with this Ditto’s offensive role of copying restricted targets and dealing as much damage as possible. Tera Ghost is also a solid option simply for the Fake Out immunity it provides, allowing the Transformed Ditto to more consistently apply pressure. Focus Sash is recommended for the item, granting Ditto vital move flexibility and ensuring that it can safely lose the speed tie at least once, without being ruined by opposing Trick Room. Choice Scarf still deserves mention, especially against opponents not running Trick Room, as immediately guaranteeing the Speed tie win places a lot of pressure on the opponent.

Preferred Partners:
If running Focus Sash, Speed control is paramount, allowing Ditto to win Speed ties against its opponent. Grimmsnarl is an excellent example of this, its Prankster Thunder Waves sapping the opponent’s Speed while leaving Ditto’s untouched. Tailwind support from the likes of Whimsicott, is another strong option as that boost’s Ditto’s speed without impacting the opponents. Given Ditto’s questionable bulk regardless of circumstance, anti-priority tools like Indeedee-F’s Psychic Surge and Farigiraf’s Armor Tail should be considered. These blocking not only Fake Out’s to break Ditto’s Focus Sash, but other options like Chien-Pao and Brute Bonnet’s Sucker Punch, Rillaboom’s Grassy Glide and Urshifu-Rapid’s Aqua Jet go a long way in keeping Ditto healthy and on the field. Ability Shield is worth considering in the case of Galarian-Weezing whose neutralizing Gas shuts down Imposter entirely.

Countering Ditto

While Ditto’s ability to become any Pokémon is fearsome, it is nothing without that and invariably flawed with it.

First and foremost are methods to block Imposter itself. Imposter fails if Ditto is sent out in front of a Substitute, allowing setup sweepers that can afford the move an easy out to Ditto. Imposter also fails against Illusion, allowing a disguised Zoroark to turn Ditto into a sitting duck though it is very difficult for Zoroark to properly lure Ditto in without being found out. Ogerpon and Terapagos who boast special forms when Terastalized also cannot be copied through imposter, the latter especially damaging as one of the few prominent Pokémon that sets up in VGC though they have to Tera before Ditto switches in. Ability negation through Neutralizing Gas stops Imposter completely leaving Galarian Weezing the easiest out to Ditto around.

Even if transformed, methods of Speed control can still allow one to gain the upper hand on Ditto. While Sticky Web does not work in this regard as it triggers before Imposter and thus wiped away by the transformation, other field effects are viable. Trick Room is especially damaging given how often Ditto runs Choice Scarf, effectively guaranteeing it will lose the speed tie due to the boost from Choice Scarf. Ditto relying on a Choice Scarf to win Speed ties means that advantage goes away when Ditto is facing another Choice Scarf user as the item will bring both to the same speed.

If push comes to shove, priority is an effective way to handle Ditto, its poor base HP meaning even bulky forms struggle to weather such assaults for long.
