When you start the game, unlike the previous Pokémon games, you will have the ability to pick your character as one of four different ones for each gender. These trainers have similar builds and costumes as you begin, but they vary in original hair colour and skin tone. The choice cannot be changed once selected so be sure to make the right choice when you begin.

You do have the ability to change your eye colour at any time in a Apparel Shop by putting in Lenses. They can be Hazel, Gray, Green, Blue, Black, Yellow, Burgundy, Violet, Brown

Located in most of the cities within the region, you'll be able to find Apparel Shops that sell various clothes. Each Apparel Shop has a special set of clothing that they sell, all in various categories. There is, however, a Version Exclusivity with the clothing. Certain colours can only be found in Pokémon Sun and others can only be found in Pokémon Moon

In addition to the clothing, the Apparel Shops have an area for you to get your character's appearance updated. This allows you to update your character's hair in both style and colour allowing it to be a better approximation of yourself.

There are Apparel Shops in the following cities:
Hau'oli City
Hau'oli City Mall
Konikoni City
Heahea City
Malie City

Each city with a boutique also has a place where you can alter the appearance of your character in more than just clothes. Typically next to the boutique, there is a salon where you can alter the length and colour of your hair. These range from Very Short, Short, Medium, Long and various other styles you unlock through the game. You can also change the colour however you wish.For female characters, you also have the option to just have the front cut which costs 500.

In the Festival Plaza, you will often find specific Dye shops. They will dye your White clothing for a price of 100 Festival Coins or various berries. This can be done repeatedly on your white clothing and can be done in one of three shades:
Pastel
Dark
Light
The shade possible is dependant on the rank of the Dye Shop. These can be done in Red, Green, Orange, Purple, Yellow, Blue, Navy Blue or Pink
