Amoonguss

Amoonguss, The Mushroom Pokémon. It lures prey close by dancing and waving its arm caps, which resemble Poké Balls, in a swaying motion. They show off their Poké Ball caps to lure prey, but very few Pokémon are fooled by this.It moves the caps on both arms and does a dance to lure prey. It prefers damp places.

Overview

Amoonguss is widely considered to be one of the best Pokemon in RU, even going so far as to being widely used in OU. Its success largely comes from its good bulk and good movepool, which includes Spore, combined with its excellent ability Regenerator, which makes Amoonguss extremely difficult to get rid of. However it does have low Speed and its Special Attack won’t do any major damage. But despite those drawbacks, Amoonguss is still an excellent choice for any team, regardless of tier.

Abilities

Effect Spore: When an opponent hits Amoonguss with a physical attack that makes contact, the opponent has a 30% chance to be paralyzed, poisoned or put to sleep. This ability is good, however it is outclassed completely by Regenerator, and the fact that you'll want to be Sporing the opposing Pokemon rather than having them get a random status.
Regenerator: After Amoonguss switches out, it regains 1/3 of its maximum health. This is one of the best abilities in the game, as it makes entry hazard damage pointless, not to mention easy recovery without wasting a move.

With a multitude of resistances, very good bulk, Regenerator and Spore, Amoonguss has the ability to take a lot of Pokemon head on. Spore is Amoonguss’ trump card. Since it has 100% accuracy, most Pokemon are instantly crippled with sleep. Giga Drain is Amoonguss’ STAB attack that also allows it to gain HP back. Sludge Bomb is also a good stab move that allows for coverage against other grass types, while Clear Smog deals with those pesky boosters, allowing Amoonguss to force its opponent to drop its boosts. Synthesis is good if you want extra recovery, and HP Fire allows coverage against ice types, which Sludge Bomb wouldn’t work against. Lastly, Stun Spore is great in combination with Spore. Usually, Spore is the move most Amoonguss use first turn. After the opponent is asleep, it would be wise to then use Stun Spore as the opponent would most likely switch the sleeping Pokemon out which leads to two Pokemon being crippled.

Amoonguss benefits from the massive use of rain in the Overused tier. Not only does it have good resistances, but now one of its weaknesses is cut in half making it an excellent wall. Spore is still Amoonguss’ most powerful weapon. It can instantly cripple any Pokemon and then cripple another with Stun Spore. Giga Drain is Amoonguss’ primary STAB attack, also gaining HP back in the process. Sludge Bomb is Amoonguss’ secondary STAB attack but with the mass amount of Dragon threats like Dragonite, as well as other type threats such as Breloom or Landorus-I, it’s recommended to use HP Ice as it can do major damage. Sludge Bomb can do good damage to Breloom, but in the perspective of coverage, HP Ice is better. Lastly, Clear Smog is good to handle threats that set up, like Calm Mind Keldeo or Swords Dance Breloom. However, Stun Spore is overall more effective as paralysis can still stop most boosting and it lasts the entirety of the match.

Other Options

Energy Ball, Growth, HP [Fire], Ingrain, Protect, Toxic
Energy Ball does provide a reliable STAB move, but generally Giga Drain is the better option as it isn't much less powerful and provides recovery in addition.
Growth is a boosting move that allows Amoonguss to increase its Special Attack (only stat that matters with Amoonguss). This also helps with HP recovery as more damage done with Giga Drain means more HP back.
Hidden Power Fire can be used to hit threats like Ferrothorn, however in the rain the damage would be cut in half making it relatively situational.
Ingrain allows Amoonguss to gain an additional 1/16 amount of health per turn, providing extra recovery which can be useful.
Protect allows Amoonguss to scout out an opponent's strategy to deal with Amoonguss, or catch an overprediction against it.
Toxic badly poisons an opponent. Spore is not to be replaced with this, as Sleep is the best status that can be induced by a move, but this could be used in the place of Stun Spore to help wear down opposing walls

Double & Triple Battle Options

As Amoonguss has no moves that can attack more than one Pokemon at once, the same tactics for singles apply here. Spore is still a great asset to be used in any Pokemon battle, as not many Pokemon have access to Spore.

Partners

Partners for Amoonguss that are good are defensive walls and anything that can eliminate Pokemon that Amoonguss cripples, so fast sweepers can generally do the job.

Countering Amoonguss

There are two factors that can stop Amoonguss in its tracks. The first one is the Sleep Clause. Since this rule is naturally used in a lot of battles, once Spore is used it makes Amoonguss an easy target, as the threat of a Spore is no longer a problem. The second factor is its speed. There are a lot of Pokemon faster than Amoonguss, and some of them can do intense damage or even OHKO before Amoonguss has a chance to use Spore. Then there’s also the Lum Berry, in which sweepers like Gallade, Absol or Dragonite (in OU) can take the Spore and KO the next turn. Sleep Talkers like Entei and Emboar can dish out super effective STAB attacks while still asleep. Lastly, a Pokemon that can set up a Substitute on Amoonguss has a huge advantage as now they are immune to any status inflicting attacks, and Amoonguss has difficulty breaking Substitutes with its low attacking power.
