Exeggutor, The Coconut Pokémon. Each of its heads has its own will. They use telepathy to discuss their plans before coming to a joint decision. When the time comes, one of its three heads falls off. Before long, the fallen head grows into an Exeggcute. It engages its enemies using psychic powers. Each of its three heads fires off psychokinetic energy, tripling its power. Each of its three heads has its own thoughts. When they want to go in different directions, Exeggutor becomes unable to move.
Having 125 base Special Attack, Exeggutor holds a place as one of the hardest hitting Pokemon in lower tier formats. In combination with its valuable Fighting-type resistance, this means Exeggutor is a solid choice on more offensively geared teams. However, Exeggutor needs more support than other Grass options due to leaning on Chlorophyll and Solar Beam even if it devotes a move slot to Sunny Day. Overall Exeggutor is a strong option to round out a bulky or offensive team in lower tier formats, though it leaves a bit to be desired among stronger threats.
Coverage - Exeggutor has quite strong coverage but not to the same degree as better Pokemon. Having access to Psyshock prevents Exeggutor from being walled by Special Defensive tanks such as Munchlax while having strong supporting moves, such as Sleep Powder and Leech Seed, to create space for itself and the team to do work.
High Special Attack - Exeggutor has insane Special Attack for lower tier formats. This combos well with its tendency to run Solarbeam and Chlorophyll, meaning most Pokemon will lose a lot of health coming into Exeggutor. Having Psyshock furthers this with its ability to hit from the physical side, making less threats safe to switch in.
Low Speed - At 55 base Speed Exeggutor without the boost of Chlorophyll is quite easy to outpace, and still pretty easy with Chlorophyll for revenge killers. This means that one of the easiest ways to handle Exeggutor is to just revenge kill it after it KOes another Pokemon.
Typing - Exeggutor has overall sub par typing, namely its Psychic typing. While it adds a Fighting resistance to help keep Exeggutor relevant in the sea of Grass/Poison Pokemon, and keeps a resistance to Ground, this means that Exeggutor is able to be Pursuit trapped and very easy to U-turn against.
Chlorophyll - Doubles speed in sun - The better ability for Exeggutor, this helps make up Exeggutor's low speed and help it to sweep if it gets sun support. It's still not the fastest thing around, though it gives it a real Speed stat to work with.
Harvest - After each turn, there's a 50% chance to recover a used berry (100% chance in the sun) - Can be used on a more niche set but is overall sub par due to relying on its awful defensive typing and Sitrus Berry's limited healing.
- Solar Beam
- Psyshock / Psychic
- Hidden Power Fire
- Sleep Powder / Sunny Day
Item Attached: Life Orb
EVs and Nature:
252 SpAtk / 4 SpDef / 252 Spd
Solar Beam is a must with Chlorophyll as the combination applies insane pressure. Psyshock is preferable over Psychic to hit Special Defensive walls but Psychic is stronger overall. Hidden Power Fire is a nice final option to hit Steel threats hard as well as other Grass threats, and combos well with sun. Sleep Powder is a nice option to create space as Exeggutor can push out a lot of the other Grass types in similar tier, while Sunny Day allows Exeggutor to boost itself.
Choice Specs - Forgoing some of the flexibility of the Life Orb set, this set allows Exeggutor to act as a wall breaker and with Sunny Day support can really punch holes through threats.
Liepard - With access to Prankster and moves such as as Thunder Wave and Encore, Liepard is an excellent lead to set up Sunny Day. With these Liepard is a strong supporting option for Exeggutor as it can create space for Exeggutor to apply pressure.
Flareon - With Flash Fire, Flareon can pivot into some of the best options for Exeggutor and gain a boost to pressure out threats, while Exeggutor can pivot into Ground and Water threats for Flareon. With Flame Charge, Flareon can also look to sweep with its high base Attack.
Checks and Counters
Skuntank - With a resistance to both STAB moves and a preference to carry a Lum Berry, Skuntank can usually take a free KO on Exeggutor with no effort. Access to Pursuit also mean that Exeggutor can't switch out safety either and has to either stand its ground with moves such as Hidden Power Ground or hope for no Pursuit on the switch.
Sap Sipper - Strong Sap Sipper users such as Bouffalant and Sliggoo can all absorb Solar Beam from Exeggutor while either tanking hits and healing with Rest, or KO back with the boost from Sap Sipper. Miltank does an equally well job with Milk Drink and can Toxic Exeggutor back.
Alolan Exeggutor, The Coconut Pokémon. Alola is the best environment for this Pokémon. Local people take pride in its appearance, saying this is how Exeggutor ought to look. As it grew taller and taller, it outgrew its reliance on psychic powers, while within it awakened the power of the sleeping dragon. Exeggutor is the pride of the Alolan people. Its image is carved into historical buildings and murals.
With its newfound Dragon typing, Alolan Exeggutor is prime contender for a powerhouse Grass threat on your team. While giving up the resistance to Fighting is big as most Grass types in its range are part Poison, Alolan Exeggutor becomes one of the best answers to Grass and Water threats with a quad resistance. However, Alolan Exeggutor wilts to any sign of Ice attacks and most Grass types do carry Poison options. Overall, Alolan Exeggutor is a powerful threat in lower tiers and something to be aware of.
Coverage - Like its Kanto form, Alolan Exeggutor has good coverage having access to Dragon STAB now on top of the normal move coverage Dragon types tend to get. The main move here is Flamethrower, allowing Alolan Exeggutor to deal with Steel-type threats that would otherwise wall it, and do wall normal Exeggutor. This is a major boon for Alolan Exeggutor but trades Psyshock for this, meaning specially defensive walls are more of a problem.
Typing - Gaining Dragon typing over Psychic, Alolan Exeggutor gets a plethora of resistances, but does forgo its Fighting resistance. New ones allow it to find more space to enter on Grass and Water threats now having a 4x resistance to them, as well as a neutrality to Fire while keeping its resistance to Ground. All this allows Alolan Exeggutor to switch in and more easily apply pressure to the enemy team than its Kanto form.
Trick Room reliant - Alolan Exeggutor has a hard time with team match ups sometimes making it subject to a bit of user luck. With Trick Room, Alolan Exeggutor has a fantastic match up into hyper offensive and offensive teams, but it needs the space to set up Trick Room which isn't simple in general, but it also means it struggles in match ups with bulky teams.
Competition - While the same species, both Exeggutor forms are in the same tier, meaning they do often compete with each other for a slot on teams. In combination with Alolan Exeggutor's other competition among other Dragon types, such as Drampa, makes it hard to fit Alolan Exeggutor on a team outside of building around it. Other Grass types also boast resistances to Fighting types thanks to secondary typing, which is another thing Alolan Exeggutor lacks.
Frisk - Reveal the opponent's item - Not the greatest ability but it's better than Harvest in most situations, since it gives you useful information you might not get otherwise.
Harvest - After each turn, there's a 50% chance to recover a used berry (100% chance in the sun) - A lesser option to Frisk, it's still an option for a defensive build with Exeggutor in combination with its ability to pivot into Water and Grass threats.
- Trick Room
- Draco Meteor
- Giga Drain / Leaf Storm
Item Attached: Dragonium Z / Life Orb
EVs and Nature:
248 HP / 252 SpAtk / 8 SpDef
Trick Room is a godsend for Alolan Exeggutor as it allows it to apply immense pressure and bypass its bad Speed. Draco Meteor helps with this as it hits for insane damage, and with a Dragonium Z it dodges the Special Attack drop. Giga Drain doesn't hit as hard but allows Alolan Exeggutor to survive longer, while Leaf Storm hits hard but forces Exeggutor out due to the stat drop. Flamethrower rounds out the set with Steel coverage, as well as other Grass types without needing to take the stat drop.
- Draco Meteor
- Leaf Storm
- Giga Drain / Sludge Bomb / Sleep Powder
Item Attached: Choice Specs
EVs and Nature:
212 HP / 252 SpAtk / 44 Spd
With Choice Specs, Alolan Exeggutor can muscle through walls quite easily. Draco Meteor and Leaf Storm are must-haves due to the raw power these moves bring to the table. Flamethrower is solid coverage to stop Steels from walling Exeggutor. Last slot is open for Giga Drain for healing, Sludge Bomb to hit Fairies, or Sleep Powder to create space. However, Sleep Powder is generally a bad idea on a choiced set as it forces you to switch out afterwards.
Other Options & Partners
Grassium Z - An option for the Trick Room set to boost Leaf Storms damage and is equally strong option to Dragonium Z, it just covers less on the spectrum.
Pivots - With its overall low Speed, Alolan Exeggutor enjoys Pokemon with access to U-Turn and Volt Switch to get it in safely. Pokemon such as Lanturn and Gligar can switch out of threat ssuch as Golem and Qwilfish into Alolan Exeggutor, who can set up Trick Room or apply pressure immediately.
Pyroar - Alolan Exeggutor's problems with Ice and Steel threats make Pyroar a nice complement, as it can remove those threats with ease while baiting in Ground- and Rock-type threats that Exeggutor A can handle with ease. Pyroar also enjoys the wallbreaking of the choiced set to allow it to sweep late game.
Checks & Counters
Residual Damage - Without a form of recovery, Alolan Exeggutor is quite easy to wear down with entry hazards and status such as Toxic and recoil from Life Orb.
Ice Coverage - With Alolan Exeggutor's 4x Ice weakness, any Ice coverage will cripple it. Hidden Power Ice being a popular Hidden Power type makes this more threatening, especially with Alolan Exeggutor's low Speed.
Specially Defensive Walls - Without access to Psyshock or running a mixed set, Alolan Exeggutor has a very hard time dealing with specially defensive foes. Both Audino and Type: Null are exceptional at this as Audino can just stall out Alolan Exeggutor, while Type Null can Rest and boost up. Assault Vest users also do quite well but have to be careful of Devastating Drake.
