Exeggutor

Exeggutor, the Coconut Pokémon. It is called the Walking Jungle. Each of the nuts has a face and a will of its own. It is said that on rare occasions, one of its heads will drop off and continue on as an Exeggcute.

Overview

Exeggutor has fallen from grace ever since its Generation 1 days where it was the best Grass type in the game. Repeated nerfs to Psychic types, losing a whopping 50 points in Special Defense during the special split and generations of power creep have really left their mark. What truly drags down Exeggutor is its typing. Grass Psychic is one of the worst in the game with numerous weaknesses that all but ensure even targets that Exeggutor seemingly resists often carry coverage to answer it. Even offensively, Exeggutor’s STABs fall flat, with an inability to hit Steel types outside of much weaker physical Ground attacks. Add in average to below average defenses and a truly poor Base 55 Speed and Exeggutor truly struggles to perform anything of note before being removed.

Which is a shame as Exeggutor can do quite a lot if given the chance to act. Grass and Psychic types have some of the best Status moves in the game, and Exeggutor greatly benefits from this heritage, with access to Sleep Powder, Screens, Leech Seed, and Trick, giving it a plethora of both supportive and disruptive moves to choose from. Base 125 Special Attack is fierce, with even uninvested Exeggutor able to hit quite hard, and with Calm Mind, even harder. This generation may be Exeggutor’s best chance yet, with Terastalization enabling Exeggutor to finally shed its onerous defensive typing and take advantage of its good HP and numerous healing options to stay alive. Additionally, Exeggutor has numerous options to answer its poor Speed, either flipping the tables with its own Trick Room or taking advantage of Chlorophyll to literally outrun most of the unboosted game in the Sun. However, Exeggutor must still contend with the many excellent Grass and Psychic types who don’t require as much setup or team support to be effective, a tall order as the generations pass on.
Positives
Great Base 125 Special Attack means when Exeggutor can get an attack off, it will sting regardless of investment.
Great Status movepool with plenty of supportive and disruptive options to keep opponents guessing.
Multiple ways to address speed stat in both Trick Room and Chlorophyll, which require different answers.
Numerous healing options make it easy for Exeggutor to stick around and outlast opponents…

Negatives
Grass Psychic is a horrid typing with many weaknesses that cut into what bulk Exeggutor has.
Base 55 Speed is rather exploitable without Chlorophyll or Trick Room and even with the former, Exeggutor is still regularly outsped by most Scarf users.
Inability to hit Steel types and common dual resistances to both STABs cut into Exeggutor’s offense.

Movesets

Sunny Deus

-Sunny Day
-Solar Beam
-Psyshock
-Tera Blast
Ability: Chlorophyll
Item: Heat Rock
EVs and Nature:
4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spe Timid Nature

This Exeggutor set is a late game Sun Sweeper, using the Sun and its great natural Special Attack to blast through a weakened team. Sunny Day is everything for Exeggutor, fixing its Speed with Chlorophyll and enabling its main STAB in Solarbeam. Solarbeam is recommended as primary STAB for its immense power, getting the most bang for your buck under Sunny Day. Psyshock is secondary STAB and its Defense hitting properties compliment Exeggutor’s primary STAB well, allowing it to muscle past sponges like Chansey, Florges, Muk, and Flareon. Tera Blast is very much recommended given Exeggutor’s poor coverage and it needs Terastalization to account for the gaps in its STABs.

Tera Types:
Given the many problems Grass Psychic has, Exeggutor loves Terastalizing. Tera Fire is highly recommended for this set, answering Steel types that resist both STABs while being further bolstered by the Sun for a massive boost. Tera Fire also synergizes wonderfully defensively as well, giving Exeggutor vital Fire, Ice, and Bug resistances and neutrality to many of its other weaknesses, while Exeggutor’s Grass STAB threatens many of Fire’s weaknesses. Tera Fighting is an alternative, hitting Steel and Grass resistant Dark types that Exeggutor struggles with while providing a nice Dark resistance though it is very hard to match everything Fire gives Sunny Day Exeggutor.

EVs and Items:
As a standard Sweeper set, max Special Attack and Speed are highly recommended. Exeggutor generally needs as much speed as possible when setting up, given its horrendous speed otherwise. Timid is recommended as the nature, as after Chlorophyll, Exeggutor can outspeed Dragapult, Scarf Medicham, and Scarf Mabostiff, all threats it would be outsped by if running a Modest Nature, though the power boost is tantalizing. Heat Rock is recommended as the item for Exeggutor and its team to benefit from the Sun as long as possible. If another teammate is setting up sun, Exeggutor’s item options open. Life Orb would be recommended for more power, as would Miracle Seed or Twisted Spoon if desiring a power boost that doesn’t drain Exeggutor.

Partners:
Allies that can setup sun are greatly valued for this set. Kantonian Ninetales is an immense enabler for this set, setting up sun instantly and can even open opportunities for Exeggutor to setup with Encore or Memento, while luring Ground and Rock types that Exeggutor can easily handle. Talonflame is another notable setter, also providing support with Tailwind and Defog while appreciating Exeggutor handling opposing Electric, Rock and Water types and can also enable setup opportunities with Will-O-Wisp.

Other Options:
Growth is fantastic if Exeggutor doesn’t have to setup its own Sun, the 1 turn lost paying dividends with the free effective Nasty Plot boost. Calm Mind isn’t as explosive but isn’t weather reliant and makes Exeggutor harder to remove. Alternative Grass STABs in Energy Ball, Grass Knot or Giga Drain are worth considering given that they don’t immediately place Exeggutor in a bad spot if the weather is changed on it by a Politoed or Abomasnow switching in. Energy Ball is the most reliable, Grass Know has variable power and Giga Drain provides longevity through its draining. Psychic is an alternative to Psyshock, and is slightly stronger than it while having a nice Special Defense dropping rider effect, but leaves Exeggutor more exposed to special sponges. Sleep Powder when available, is worth consideration given the power of Sleep and Exeggutor’s sun boosted Speed, enabling Exeggutor to subvert most checks. Sludge Bomb is Exeggutor’s lone special coverage option outside of Tera Blast, but its ability to hit opposing Grass and Fairy types is decently useful.

VGC & Doubles Options

Exeggutor’s many flaws hold it back in VGC as well, and the many other excellent Chlorophyll and Protosynthesis users leave Sun Sweeper Exeggutor high and dry. However, this generation is Exeggutor’s best chance yet. Terastalization is an immense benefit to Exeggutor, enabling to shed its onerus defensive typing for a much better one, and make the most of Harvest to become nigh immortal with the infinite healing of recycled Sitrus Berry. Exeggutor puts this newfound immortality to good use, taking advantage of the one good thing its base typing grants it; an absurd movepool. Grass and Psychic types have some of the best Status moves in the game and Exeggutor gets access to a lot of them. Trick Room, Screens, Sleep Powder, and Imprison are all great options to have, in addition to potent STABs fueled by its high Special Attack. Exeggutor is by no means a fantastic Pokémon; you must carefully build your team around it, but Exeggutor’s unique traits can throw opponents for a loop.

Eggs of Beowulf

-Trick Room
-Giga Drain
-Psychic
-Protect
Tera Type: Poison
Ability: Harvest
Item: Sitrus Berry
EVs and Nature:
236 HP / 76 Def / 196 SDef
Calm Nature

A set based on Wolfe Glick’s support Exeggutor, it makes the most of the infinite healing Harvest and Sitrus Berry provides to stick around. This makes it one of the best Trick Room setters in the game for the sheer longevity it boasts, for as long as your opponent is unable to KO Exeggutor over a single turn, it can repeatedly setup Trick Room without fail. Giga Drain aids in Exeggutor’s longevity being a STAB draining move, applying damage, and threatening popular Pokémon like Ursaluna, Ting-Lu and Urshifu Rapid. Psychic is secondary STAB and shows best the benefits of Exeggutor’s massive Special Attack, doing appreciable damage even uninvested while threatening Urshifu, Kommo-o, Amoonguss and more. Protect is vital for this set, help stall out for Harvest recycling Sitrus Berry both in and out of Sun, while providing the myriad of other benefits expected in Doubles including blocking Fake Out, stalling out opposing field conditions, scouting for information, waiting for setup on your side to be completed and more.

EV Spread is to make Exeggutor as bulky as possible, with even Specs Flutter Mane unable to 2HKO without significant Special Attack investment, and still avoiding a Wicked Blow into Sucker Punch KO from Urshifu-Single post Terastalization. Speaking of Terastalization, Tera Poison is recommended for enemy number one Flutter Mane, removing Exeggutor’s Ghost weakness, and giving it resistance to Flutter Mane’s other STAB while still matching up well into the many Fighting and Grass types Exeggutor is expected to handle.

Other Options and Preferred Partners:

Torkoal is the ideal partner for Exeggutor, being a slow Sun starter, pushing Harvest’s chances to guaranteed while greatly benefiting from Trick Room and being the start of a fantastic Fire-Grass core, historically great for its offensive-defensive synergy. Exeggutor is so much weaker without Sun support that if you aren’t bringing Torkoal or another sun setter like Prankster Tornadus, it is best to leave Exeggutor behind as well. Incineroar also deserves mention, being an Intimidate user that also benefits from Torkoal’s Sun and having access to tools like STAB Snarl and Knock Off making Exeggutor even more effectively bulky and harder to KO. Arcanine and Hisuian Arcanine can work as well have similar typings and Intimidate.

Psyshock again deserves mention, being a far stronger hit on Flutter Mane and Assault Vest users, but given Exeggutor’s longevity, the extra power and potential Special Defense drop from Psychic get more bang for your buck in most instances. Sleep Powder is powerful given how important turn economy is in Doubles, capable of shutting down multiple opponents over the course of a battle, though the accuracy leaves a little to be desired. Imprison is fantastic, shutting down opposing Protect and potentially Trick Room, disrupting opposing Trick Room strategies or removal and preventing the opponent from stalling. Helping Hand is worth mention, given the defensive nature of this set, Exeggutor may be better served boosting a partner than attacking itself.

Countering Exeggutor

If in formats where Sleep is allowed, that must be taken in consideration when facing Exeggutor given the sheer momentum swing Sleep generates. Psychic resistant Grass types do the best provided Exeggutor isn’t running Sludge Bomb, resisting Exeggutor’s STABs while threatening back with effective STABs of their own. Cacturne, Brute Bonnet, and Wo-Chien cause the large majority of Exeggutor sets problems. Other Grass types can work well, but desperately need a super effective STAB of their own unless they want to be torn apart by Exeggutor’s Psychic STAB. Scovillain, Leavanny, and U-Turn Flapple are other excellent examples.

Grass resistant Dark types are a huge headache for Exeggutor, given that it has little to answer them offensively. Overqwil, Alolan Muk, Incineroar, Houndoom, and Bombirdier can all safely switch into Exeggutor’s STABs and easily threaten it back thanks to their STABs and higher base speed (or sheer Special Bulk in Alolan Muk’s case).

Chlorophyll sets are easily disrupted by opposing weather, but given if the Sun is up, Exeggutor outspeeds almost anything unboosted, passive setters like Abomasnow are preferred. Opposing Chlorophyll users excel best here given Exeggutor is one of the slower Chlorophyll users around and frequently loses the speed war against the competition, such as Leafeon, Venusaur, Sawsbuck and Scovillain.

For Harvest sets, Knock Off is by far and away the best way to handle them, as berries removed from Knock Off cannot be recycled by Harvest, essentially gutting the set’s ability.

Aside from everything mentioned Exeggutor is pitifully easy to check offensively. Its poor Speed and numerous weaknesses leave it slow and frail, and thus struggles to make an impact before being eliminated.

Alolan Corner

Alolan Exeggutor, the Coconut Pokémon. It swings its long neck like a whip and smacks its head into opponents. This makes Exeggutor itself a little dizzy too. As it grew taller and taller, it outgrew its reliance on psychic powers, while within it awakened the power of the sleeping dragon.

Overview

Exeggutor’s long necked cousin, its Alolan form is quite a divergence. Trading the abysmal Grass Psychic typing for a much better Grass Dragon typing, Alolan Exeggutor is a much more offensive tree, possessing a far greater offensive movepool and viable Attack stat, making it an unpredictable threat. Access to both Flamethrower and Earthquake make Alolan Exeggutor much more adept at thrashing the Steel types that resist both of its STABs and stymie its Kantonian counterpart. Additionally, Grass Dragon boasts incredibly valuable resistances into Water, Grass, Ground and Electric, which with Harvest and access to draining moves gives Alolan Exeggutor some degree of longevity.

This generation has been rough for Alolan Exeggutor, who not only has long neck competition in Farigarif and Raging Bolt, but direct competition in Hydrapple, another slow bulky offensive Grass Dragon type that boasts better direct recovery in Regenerator. Alolan Exeggutor’s Dragon subtyping is as much a curse as it is a boon, giving Alolan Exeggutor a crippling quadruple Ice weakness and common Fairy weakness to contend with. Even more so is the competition, has Alolan Exeggutor struggles to stand out against the many other Grass types running around. Alolan Exeggutor’s even poorer Speed and same lackluster Special Defense do not help matters either, especially given the far fewer tools it has to answer its Speed due to losing Chlorophyll in comparison to its Kantonian counterpart. Alolan Exeggutor’s offense is as surprising as its appearance, but poor speed and glaring weaknesses make this tree better suited for friendlier shores.
Positives
Incredible Base 125 Special Attack with boosting options in Calm Mind ensures Alolan Exeggutor always hits hard specially
105 Attack is quite usable and with excellent coverage options, Alolan Exeggutor can easily run mixed sets to further confound the opposition.
Grass Dragon offers great resistances, helping Alolan Exeggutor pivot in safely.

Negatives
Grass Dragon also offers a horribly crippling Ice weakness and common weakness in Fairy, making it easy to remove.
At base 45 Speed,Even slower than its Kantonian counterpart and lacks Chlorophyll to make up for it.

Movesets

Rocket Tree Dragon

-Leaf Storm
-Draco Meteor
-Flamethrower
-Sludge Bomb
Ability: Frisk
Item: Eject Pack
EVs and Nature:
252 HP / 252 SAtk / 4SDef
Modest Nature

Alolan Exeggutor makes the most out of its insane special bulk and appreciable physical bulk to pivot in on opponents lacking Ground and Fighting moves and launch Draco Meteors that raze anything not too overly bulk

This Alolan Exeggutor set styles is an attacker, taking advantage of its great Special Attack and wide coverage to threaten the opponent. Leaf Storm and Draco Meteor are horrifically powerful STABs that pair well with Eject Pack, acting as a one time super charged U-Turn or Volt Switch, enabling Alolan Exeggutor to blast a target and then switch out for an ally to keep the momentum going. Flamethrower compliments Alolan Exeggutor’s STABs well, melting Steel and Tera Steel types that resist both STABs, punishing predicted switch ins and further reducing counterplay. Sludge Bomb rounds out the set, exclusively hitting Fairy types and punishing those trying to make a risky read and switch into a predicted Draco Meteor. This Alolan Exeggutor set excels on VoltTurn teams as a one time pivot user, helping keep the advantageous matchup and pairing well with most Volt Switch users who dislike the Ground types that stymie their own switching.

Tera Types:
Alolan Exeggutor’s base typing has some obvious strengths and does not always like Terastalizing. The same goes true for this set, with Defensive Terastalizations being preferred so Alolan Exeggutor can stick around longer to keep attacking. Tera Steel is the obvious choice given its wide array of resistances including to every one of Alolan Exeggutor’s weaknesses, flipping the script on many attackers. Tera Fire is a defensive/offensive option, giving a resistance to Ice and Fairy while boosting Flamethrower, though Alolan Exeggutor’s atrocious speed means that it struggles to ward off most Water, Ground and Rock types post Tera.

EVs and Items:
Max Special Attack and HP are recommended for a mixture of offense and bulk. Speed investment can be considered to outrun certain Pokémon and reduce the numer of attacks Alolan Exeggutor takes before attacking. 44 Speed outruns uninvested base 50s like Regirock, Piloswine, and Eelektross. 124 outspeed uninvested Pokémon up to base 60 like Abomasnow, Weezing, Lapras and Porygon2, though it should be noted at this tier, Speed investment is not uncommon. 204 Speed is enough to outspeed uninvested base 70s, namely bulky Wo-Chien. Eject Pack as noted above is the crux of the set, giving Alolan Exeggutor a pseudo pivoting attack and helping maintain momentum. If one does not want that one-time utility, Choice Specs offers overwhelming power and synergizes well with the hit and run style of this set. Alternatively, one could try to abuse Harvest with Sitrus Berry for Alolan Exeggutor for extra longevity.

Partners:
As noted, Alolan Exeggutor excels on VoltTurn teams that can constantly pivot to maintain positioning, especially with Volt Switch users. Jolteon is an excellent example, being a blistering fast Volt Switch user that threatens opposing Flying types while relying on Alolan Exeggutor to take care of Ground and Grass types. Jolteon’s high speed partially helps cover Alolan Exeggutor’s low speed, being a fast threat that can help revenge KO targets that threaten out Exeggutor like Scyther. Lanturn is another great example, being a slow defensive pivot that can get in safely and enjoys Alolan Exeggutor’s better matchup in Grass types. Speaking of Scyther it also partners well with Alolan Exeggutor, its brutal physical offense complementing Exeggutor’s Special. Alolan Exeggutor being able to readily handle physically bulky Rock types like Rhydon and Regirock while still being able to pivot into Electric attacks make it a great pivot target for Scyther’s U-Turns. Alolan Exeggutor even stands out from the competition by being a Grass type not weak to Fire, lessening the strain on teambuilding. Flip Turn users like Bruxish and Floatzel work well, forming a great Grass-Water core and love how Alolan Exeggutor stuffs opposing Grass and Electric types, while maintaining a positive matchup against opposing Water types.

Other Options:
Psyshock hits dedicated sponges like Chansey and Snorlax hard while giving Poison types like Toxicroak some pause Giga Drain is an alternative or secondary Grass STAB that doesn’t drop Alolan Exeggutor’s Special Attack as well as give it added recovery, keeping Alolan Exeggutor around longer. Knock Off is a surprise move, that is mostly on here for its utility, but the benefits gained from item removal cannot be matched and Alolan Exeggutor’s good attack ensures it still stings.

Tall Tree Tank

-Curse
-Dragon Hammer
-Seed Bomb
-Knock Off
Ability: Harvest
Item: Sitrus Berry
EVs and Nature:
252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SDef
Careful Nature

Curse Alolan Exeggutor is a defensive behemoth and cleaner, using its good resistances to get in safely and start setting up before laying into the opponent. Curse is the crux of the set, improving Alolan Exeggutor’s good Attack and Defense, making it very difficult to remove. Dragon Hammer is Alolan Exeggutor’s best physical STAB, having wide neutral coverage and no drawback. Seed Bomb is an excellent secondary STAB, having valuable coverage into high Defense Water, Ground and Rock types, prevent such Pokémon from being stopgaps against Alolan Exeggutor unlike other physical attackers. Knock Off is here for its utility, depriving many a switch in of their item makes them far less dangerous, both offensively and defensively, while having good neutral coverage into targets that resist both STABs.

Tera Types:
Alolan Exeggutor desperately needs as many resistances as possible to safely setup, and as such Tera Steel is again recommended for the sheer number of resistances it provides. Pivot from Grass-Dragon to Steel to shutdown an opponent’s turn of offense and grab a vital boost before going out swinging. Tera Water is a popular alternative, given it is a fantastic typing defensively with few weaknesses to exploit.

EVs and Items:
Max HP and Special Defense are recommended, as Curse will be used to bolster Alolan Exeggutor’s Attack and Defense, making it as hard to break as possible once setup. Moving investment to Attack is recommended if looking for a more offensive Exeggutor and requiring fewer Curses to be an immediate threat, and especially if not running Curse at all. Sitrus Berry is recommended as the item, in conjunction with Harvest to get repeated bursts of healing, keeping Alolan Exeggutor healthy as it sets up. Custap berry is a niche but interesting option, giving Alolan Exeggutor repeatable pseudo priority after Cursing, enabling it to get the drop on faster attackers. If not abusing Harvest, Leftovers is recommended for the passive healing it provides, keeping Alolan Exeggutor up as long as possible.

Partners:
Allies that can setup sun are greatly valued for this set for guaranteeing the healing needed to keep going. Kantonian Ninetales is an immense enabler for this set, setting up sun instantly and can even open opportunities for Alolan Exeggutor to setup with Encore or Memento, while luring Ground and Rock types that Exeggutor can easily handle. Prankster Grafaiai is another option, quickly setting up the Sun and providing excellent pivoting in Parting Shot and U-Turn to ease setup while valuing Alolan Exeggutor’s matchup against opposing Ground types.

Other Options:
Synthesis provides fantastic healing that isn’t contingent on Alolan Exeggutor’s item, but comes at the cost of coverage. Earthquake is Alolan Exeggutor’s best answer against opposing Steel types, but it has to sacrifice coverage or STAB to run it. Leaf Storm is worth considering on non Curse sets as a way to eliminate walls like Regirock and Golem who can otherwise take Alolan Exeggutor’s Grass STAB quite well. .

Countering Alolan Exeggutor

Alolan Exeggutor’s wide offensive reach leaves few direct safe answers, and that number drops down to near nothing when factoring in Sleep Powder and Knock Off.

Specially Defensive Wo-Chien can switch into any attack aside from Specs Flamethrower or Sludge Blomb, but needs Ruination to do meaningful damage. Rest Snorlax can outlast both the physical and special sets, but unless running some Attack investment and Double Edge, it does lose one on one to Specs Draco Meteor/Leaf Storm.

Into more specific checks, Specially defensive Muk and Alolan Muk can both tank a Specs Draco Meteor and 2HKO back with Poison Jab, but they can’t switch into one directly as Specs Draco Meteor can 2HKO and will 3HKO. If not running Choice Specs, Assault Vest Hariyama can manage provided it can outspeed and 2HKO with Close Combat.

Due to the significantly lower base Attack, physical sets tend to be easier to tank, but they are more likely to run Knock Off and one off moves like Leaf Storm or Draco Meteor. Orthworm and Bronzong are hard walls for such sets, their abilities completely nullifying the Earthquake Alolan Exeggutor would use as coverage and having the bulk to tank its other attacks. Weezing is another notable answer, tanking even boosted Dragon Hammers while solidly 2HKOing back with Sludge Bomb.

Revenge killing Alolan Exeggutor is far simpler given its poor speed and overwhelming power discouraging defensive answers. Alolan Sandslash, Frosmoth, Piloswine and Froslass all nab easy OHKOs with their Ice STABs, though the former 3 need significant speed investment to avoid being outsped by speedier Alolan Exeggutor. Scyther also cleanly OHKOs with Dual Wingbeat or 2HKOs with U-Turn. Grafaiai also does well, its Gunk Shot OHKOing Alolan Exeggutor after some Stealth Rocks. Other excellent answers include Dodrio, Hisuian Braviary, Toxicroak, etc.
