Rotom, The Plasma Pokémon. One boy's invention led to the development of many different machines that take advantage of Rotom's unique capabilities. With a body made of plasma, it can inhabit all sorts of machines. It loves to surprise others.
Overview
Rotom has had an interesting history, starting from being a post game exclusive Pokémon found in a TV of all things, to being mass produced into becoming a Pseudo Mascot for Pokémon, powering all of their technology. However, Rotom’s normal form has fallen by the wayside as everything around it got stronger. Its typing and movepool befitting of a Ghost type means that Rotom has many tricky options to bring to a fight, but its poor STATs let it down more often than not.
Positives
Ghost Electric with Levitate gives Rotom 5 Resistances and 3 Immunities, giving Rotom ample opportunity to switch in throughout a battle.
Wide Support movepool befitting of a Ghost type in tandem with Volt Switch allows Rotom to quickly hinder an opponent, than Volt Switch out to safety, keeping momentum in your favor.
Negatives
Poor bulk. While Rotom may have many resistances and immunities, Poor HP and Below Average Defenses means that even resisted hits will still hurt.
Lackluster Offense. Base 95 Special Attack isn’t impressive without a boost and while Rotom can boost it with Nasty Plot and Specs to respectable levels, its nonexistent coverage outside of STABs means the pay off is underwhelming.
Generally outclassed by its Alternate forms who possess better stats, the same base movepool and additional coverage.

EVs and Nature:
4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
Choice Specs immediately brings Rotom’s power to respectable levels and enables it to punch holes in the opposing team thanks to the fantastic neutral coverage of its STABs. Shadow Ball and Thunderbolt are the primary STABs hitting targets like Araquanid, Mantine and Articuno Galar hard. Volt Switch is a fantastic move, allowing Rotom to scout potential switch ins and dealing serious damage as it switches out to a counter. Trick remains invaluable against Walls and defensive Pokémon who can tank Rotom’s attacks, as Tricking a Choice item onto a wall will hinder them for the remainder of the match.
Dynamax
Rotom only having two coverage types and both Max Phantasm and Max Lightning doing nothing for Rotom personally means that Dynamax is not recommended except in emergency situation or to temporarily break the Choice lock.EVs and Items
As noted, this is a Choice specs set, so maximizing speed and damage output are the highest priorities. Rotom’s speed is actually decent so investing into that over bulk is recommended.
Partners
Scrafty and Hitmontop are good partners for Rotom, able to dispatch Dark types that Resist Shadow Ball and can take advantage of Volt Switch to easily come in and weaken the opponent with Intimidate.
Flygon is another fantastic partner able to deal with most Pokémon immune to Electric moves (Ground types and Electric types with Lightning Rod/Motor Drive and Volt Absorb). Admittedly Rotom doesn’t have that much trouble with these targets defensively, and can win if locked into Shadow Ball, but being locked into Thunderbolt or Volt Switch will force a manual switch, so having a natural check to these Pokémon is recommended.
Other Options
Choice Scarf -with Choice Scarf, Rotom can utilize its good base speed to harry opponents. Sets running Choice Scarf may want to swap out Thunderbolt for one of Rotom’s many support moves as the high speed will near guarantee that Rotom will be able to land its Status move.
Countering Rotom
Dark types that resist Rotom’s STABs will always force it out, as Rotom’s coverage options are nonexistent. Krookodile gets special mention due to being part Ground, so Rotom can’t even escape with Volt Switch. Guzzlord, Morpeko, Zarude and Shiftry all fit this role as well, but aside from Morpeko and Zarude must be wary of Rotom Volt Switching out before they can react into a counter.
Diggersby is a unique case where both it and Rotom are immune to each other’s STABs, though Diggersby’s wider movepool will ensure that Diggersby can put Rotom down.
Electric immune Pokémon also deserve a mention, as that prevents Rotom from chipping them with Volt Switch, though be wary as Shadow Ball will sting if not locked into an Electric move. Assault Vest Lanturn, Manectric and Jolteon fill this role nicely, the former easily taking a few Specs Shadow Balls while the latter two naturally outspeeds and OHKOs with their own anti Ghost coverage. Checks must be wary of Rotom’s extensive support movepool, as many of the above abhor being tricked a Choice Item, burned with Will-o-Wisp or Paralyzed with Thunder Wave.
Rotom, The Plasma Pokémon. In this form, Rotom applies its new power over wind to its love of pranks. It will happily blow away any important documents it can find. This Rotom has taken over a fan that has a special motor. Its gusts of wind blow its opponents away!
Overview
Lauded as the joke among the Rotom Forms, Fan-Rotom has a bit going for it. The Electric Flying combination is fantastic defensively and offensively, and Fan-Rotom can certainly abuse it defensively. Rotom has a generally good support moveset that all of the forms can utilize, and Fan-Rotom is no exception. If only it did not have Levitate, a normally excellent ability found on all the Rotom Forms, this is utterly redundant on Fan-Rotom. Like any Flying type, Fan-Rotom enjoys the new Heavy Duty boots to avoid Stealth Rocks, and certainly has one of the best Alternate Form moves for a Max Move. However, the presence of stronger Electric Flying types means that Fan-Rotom remains outclassed.
PositivesElectric Flying gives Fan-Rotom resistances to many common types in Grass, Fighting and an important immunity to Ground.
50/107/107 Defenses are above average, enabling Fan-Rotom to take multiple hits and pivot a few times throughout the match.
Wide support movepool befitting of its Ghost base form ensures that Fan-Rotom always has something to contribute.
Negatives
Levitate is redundant and wasted on Fan-Rotom.
Ice and Rock are common coverage moves, ensuring most teams have a move that can crush Fan-Rotom.
Lack of reliable recovery moves outside of Pain Split prevents Fan-Rotom from consistently walling.
Movesets
Eerie Aerator
-Air Slash
-Volt Switch
-Will-o-Wisp
-Trick
Item Attached: Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
EVs and Nature:
4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
With Choice Scarf, Fan-Rotom is amazingly fast outspeeding even unboosted threats like Dragapult. That speed works well with Air Slash’s generous 33% hit chance, enabling Fan-Rotom to get in some unanswered hits, chipping the opponent. Volt Switch remains invaluable, being a STAB pivot move that enables Fan-Rotom to scout switches and switch to the appropriate check and maintain momentum by hitting the target. Will-o-Wisp accentuates Fan-Rotom’s matchup against the predominantly physical Fighting and Ground types, coming in on their STABs and crippling them for the rest of the match before they can react. Trick rounds out the set, giving Fan-Rotom utility against walls by depriving them of their defensive item and saddling them with a Choice lock that prevents easy recovery and walling.
Dynamax
STAB Max Airstream is fantastic, but under Choice Scarf Rotom-Fan already outspeeds most targets anyways. Additionally only having two Max Moves means that Rotom Fan should not be your go to Dynamaxer. This Rotom-Fan should only stick to Dynamaxing in an emergency.EVs & Items
Maximizing Speed and Special attack are standard for any Choice Set. Timid Nature could be dropped for Modest, but then you run the risk of being outsped by other Choice Scarfers. If that is not a concern, you could keep the Timid Nature and sacrifice some speed EVs to increase Fan-Rotom’s HP or Defense. At least 128 Speed is necessary for Timid Fan-Rotom to outspeed Jolly Aerodactyl
Other Options
Nasty Plot -Fan-Rotom could run a Nasty Plot set with either Shadow Ball for additional coverage or Pain Split to remain healthy.
Thunder Wave -Further speed control is always appreciated, but Fan-Rotom already draws in a lot of Electric Immune Pokémon
Air Balloon - No not really, but let's give Fan Rotom a third Ground immunity,
Partners
Seismitoad and Gastrodon are amazing partners for Fan-Rotom, dealing with the Electric types and Flying Resistant Ground types that utterly wall it. Fan-Rotom easily takes care of opposing Grass types and can Burn physical attackers to make their walling duties easier. Steelix also deals with most Electric types easily while also taking most Rock moves aimed at Fan-Rotom. Other Steel types make an excellent pivot point for Rotom-Fan, as they can easily take attacks from Fan-Rotom’s weaknesses, while Fan-Rotomcan switch into Ground and Fighting attacks aimed at them.
Counters
Other Electric types are Fan-Rotom’s worst nightmare as they resist both of Fan-Rotom’s STABs are immune to Thunderwave and their own Electric STAB is neutral vs Fan-Rotom, meaning they would win the war of Attrition. Electric Immune Electric types like Jolteon, Lanturn, Manectric and Togedemaru are particularly troublesome, as they prevent Fan-Rotom from getting way with Volt Switch and even recovering or setting up from it.
Flying Resistant Ground types like Rhyperior and Steelix are similarly insurmountable foes to Fan-Rotom, but must be wary of Will-o-Wisp burns.
Rotom, The Plasma Pokémon. Rotom assumes this form when it takes over a refrigerator powered by a special motor. It battles by spewing cold air. When it's like this, Rotom likes to play pranks that are freezing cold. You may find it's turned the bath you just filled to solid ice!
Overview
The first Pokémon to possess STAB on the coveted BoltBeam combo, Frost-Rotom has suffered from the curse of all Ice types, for Ice is a horrible defensive type and that remains true with Frost-Rotom. Offensively among the Rotom forms, Frost-Rotom is the cream of the crop, its STAB combination possessing the widest breadth of coverage, both Super Effective and Neutral. However, instead of its Ice STAB being the reliable Ice Beam, Frost-Rotom is shackled with Blizzard as its lone Ice STAB, an unreliable move in most circumstances, further cutting into Frost-Rotom’s viability.
Generation 8 has decided to further spit into Frost-Rotom’s viability by giving Arctozolt the same type combination. While Arctozolt is more a physical attacker thanks to Bolt Beak, it thrives under Hail even more than Frost-Rotom thanks to Slush Rush. Frost-Rotom is better off defensively thanks to Levitate and is actually much faster outside of Hail, so Frost-Rotom is not completely without a niche. Additionally, with the loss of Hidden Power, very few Electric types have Ice coverage, giving Frost-Rotom a leg up as it can deal with both the Ground and Dragon types that stymie lightning offenses.
PositivesElectric Ice is an amazing STAB combination, with a select few Pokémon in the game able to resist it.
Levitate gives Immunity to Ground moves and most entry hazards, so Frost-Rotom has an easier time staying healthy over repeated switch-ins and can actually come in on Ground types.
Negatives
Electric Ice is horrible defensively, and a Stealth Rock weakness means that Frost-Rotom is still getting chewed up on switching in.
Blizzard as Frost-Rotom’s lone Ice STAB means that Frost-Rotom desperately needs Hail support to function, further stacking Ice weaknesses on a team and Hail does not play well with other types.
Lack of reliable recovery means that repeated hits add up fast.
Movesets
Eidolic Icebox
-Blizzard
-Thunderbolt
-Nasty Plot
-Pain Split
Item Attached: Leftovers/Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs and Nature:
4 HP / 252 SpA /252 Spe
Timid Nature
Frost-Rotom is a vicious wallbreaker after a Nasty Plot boost, as its near unresisted STAB combination cleaves through most targets after a Nasty Plot and everything not named Chansey or Blissey after two. Blizzard and Thunderbolt are your lone offensive moves, Blizzard because you have no choice and Thunderbolt for reliability. Pain Split is the last move, giving Frost-Rotom some recovery as it sets up.
Dynamax
This set loves to Dynamax as it patches up every issue with Blizzard, making it perfectly accurate Max Hailstorm, setting up Hail for continuous chip damage and increasing Frost-Rotom’s bulk to the point it can stomach a super effective hit. Ice Electric is a fantastic STAB combination and Frost-Rotom can get away having both as its only Max moves.EVs & Items
As Standard for most sweepers, Max speed and Special Attack to ensure Frost-Rotom spreads as much destruction as possible. Due to how poor Electric Ice is defensively, there is little point in investing in HP or the defenses as striking your opponent down before they can act will make you more defense than any bulk investment.
Other Options
Thunderwave -gives Rotom Frost some speed control, enabling it to outspeed more targets, but when Frost-Rotom comes, its checks and counters should be hinderd or KOd, as Frost-Rotom has a hard enough time finding time to setup as it is.
Partners
Abomasnow, Aurorus, Vanilluxe and Alolan Ninetales are incredibly valuable for their Hail Support. Blizzard and Hail goes together like Ice Cream and Cookies and since Frost-Rotom is forced to run the former, having the accessory that makes it good is only natural.
Araquanid and Slurpuff are noticeable for providing valuable speed control in Sticky Web while dealing with Frost-Rotom’s Fire and Fighting weaknesses respectively.
Checks & Counters
Lanturn and Magnezone give Frost-Rotom so much trouble for actually resisting the Blizzbolt combo, being bulky enough to tank a few Shadow Balls and beat Frost-Rotom with their non-Electric STABs relatively easily.
On sets not running Nasty Plot, dedicated special sponges like Chansey, Blissey, and Cryogonal can easily stomach Frost-Rotom’s STABs and setup or dispatch them in short order, though do be wary of Trick shutting these Pokémon down.
Otherwise, faster Pokémon with Super Effective STABs can come in and revenge KO Frost-Rotom. Arcanine, Lycanroc, Hawlucha, Moltres, and Darmanitan all fit those role well, though they do not want to be caught on the switch with a boosted Thunderbolt.
Rotom, The Plasma Pokémon. This Rotom has possessed a convection microwave oven that uses a special motor. It also has a flair for manipulating flames. This form of Rotom enjoys making mischief by turning up the heat. It will gleefully burn your favorite outfit.
Overview
While Rotom-Heat has been seen as an inferior Rotom appliance before due to its weakness to Stealth Rock, thanks to its new toy in Heavy-Duty Boots, Rotom-Heat can now ignore hazard damage transforming it into a decent pivot and an excellent wall-breaker. When combined with its ability Levitate, decent STAB combination and access to Defog, this makes Rotom-H effective at playing various roles. However, Rotom-Heat finds itself struggling against Pokemon that its STAB combination can't hurt such as strong special attacking Dragon types and while its typing combination is great, a weakness to Water and Rock and the limits of its STAB combination makes it unable to hurt Pokemon like Gastrodon or Swampert. Despite this, Rotom-Heat can still become a decent Pokemon to use with the right support.
PositivesA decent base 105 special attack allows Rotom-Heat to hit decently, even without investment.
It's Fire/Electric typing and Levitate grants Rotom-Fire a great defensive typing with various resistances to popular types like Ice, Steel, Fairy, Grass and Flying along with its Ground immunity.
Access to Will-o-Wisp allows Rotom-Wash to check physical threats easier and it will make Pokemon like Excadrill or Rillaboom to think twice before switching into it.
Negatives
It's low base 50 HP holds back Rotom-Heat's ability to check metagame threats. With Rest and Pain Split being Rotom-Wash's only form to recover lost HP, it makes it unreliable on the long run.
Pokemon that resist its STAB combination like Lati@s, Hydreigon, Kommo-o and Dragapult, will have an easy time walling it.
Rotom-Heat is walled to death by Pokemon like Swampert, Gastrodon and Seismitoad meaning that the only thing Rotom-Heat can do is hinder them with a burn.
Rotom-Heat is forced to rely on Overheat as its only Fire STAB which makes it hard to use without Nasty Plot as it removes its boosts every time it is forced to use it.
Due to its over-reliance on Heavy Duty Boots, Rotom-Heat has to be careful on switching into Knock Off from targets like Toxapex as otherwise it hinders its ability to switch into threats.
Movesets
BOSCH
- Nasty Plot
- Overheat
- Discharge / Thunderbolt
- Pain Split / Will-O-Wisp
Item Attached: Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Levitate
EVs and Nature:
248 HP / 8 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
A very good offensive typing in tandem with Nasty Plot makes Rotom-H a good wallbreaker, as it is easily able to break through common defensive Pokemon like Clefable, Ferrothorn, and Corviknight. It is mostly used on balance and bulky offensive teams looking for a reliable progress maker or Togekiss check. Nasty Plot allows Rotom-Heat to increase its Special Attack to great levels while nullifying Overheat's special attack drop. Discharge is Rotom-H's secondary STAB allowing it to punish switch-ins like Hydreigon and Lati@s with paralysis. Thunderbolt can be used for higher power against targets like Milotic or Azumarill, however, Discharge is preferred due to its higher paralysis chance. Pain Split allows Rotom-Heat to recover any lost health. Will-o-Wisp is also an option to hinder Pokemon like Excadrill or Rillaboom.
Dynamax
The biggest benefit Rotom-Heat can gain is the ability to nullify Overheat's stat drops for three turns and set up Sun on its favor with Max Flare. This set does well on exploiting Dynamax due to its more offensive path. The extra bulk can also help Rotom-Heat on preserving its Nasty Plot boosts and tank hits. It's recommended to only use Dynamax on this Rotom until its checks are gone as otherwise it won't be able to overwhelm Pokemon like Lati@s.EVs & Items
Max Speed with a Timid nature allows Rotom-Heat to outspeed all base 85s and lower such as Gyarados, Suicune and Togekiss. 248 HP is used to maximize its bulk with the rest going to Special Attack to slightly bolster its power. Heavy-Duty Boots is the only item viable to use in Rotom-Heat due to its ability to nullify Stealth Rock damage which is something that Rotom-Heat heavily needs in order to have more switch-ins.
Partners
Clefable and Blissey are particularly good partners, as they are often able to deal with common threats to Rotom-H, such as Dragapult and Hydreigon while also providing Wish support.
Other Options
Trick and Choice Scarf are also decent options on Rotom-Heat allowing it to hinder defensive switch-ins like Blissey and Toxapex while also providing Defog support, if needed. However, once its Scarf is tricked, Rotom-Wash becomes dead-weight.
Checks & Counters
Water/Ground Pokemon are your best bet since Rotom-Heat cannot touch them at all due to Overheat's side effects and the removal of Hidden Power. While Swampert does not like burns, Gastrodon and Seismitoad don't care since they rely more on their special attack. Faster Water types like Urshifu-Rapid Strike will destroy Rotom-Heat.
While Rock types don't like burns, Pokemon like Lycanroc and Nihilego threaten it with their super-effective STABs and higher Speed.
Strong special attackers that do not care for burns like Lati@s, Hydreigon, Kommo-o and Dragapult can easily set up in Rotom-Heat due to its inability to damage them and hit Rotom-Heat very strongly with their STAB moves.
Rotom-Heat despises Knock Off due to its ability to remove its Heavy-Duty Boots, forcing it to take hazard damage.
Rotom, The Plasma Pokémon. This form of Rotom enjoys coming up with water- based pranks. Be careful with it if you don't want your room flooded. This Rotom has possessed a washing machine that uses a special motor. It blasts out water to get enemies to back down.
Overview
Rotom-Wash's typing, decent bulk and Levitate allows it to act as a decent pivot against notable threats like Mamoswine, Corviknight and Melmetal. Sadly, Rotom-W's poor HP stat in conjunction with its reliance on Leftovers and Pain Split for recovery holds back its ability to act as a reliable pivot and exacerbates its vulnerability to poison, burn, and Stealth Rock damage. In addition, it struggles to check popular Pokemon like Rillaboom, Hydreigon, Dragapult and Blissey. Despite these shortcomings being more notable on this new generation, Rotom-Wash can still do a great job with the right support..
PositivesA decent base 105 special attack allows Rotom-Wash to hit decently, even without investment.
It's Water/Electric typing and Levitate grants Rotom-Wash one of the best typings in the game with a good STAB combination and valuable resistances to common types like Flying, Fire, Water, Ice and a Ground immunity.
Access to Will-o-Wisp allows Rotom-Wash to check physical threats easier and it will make Pokemon like Excadrill or Rillaboom to think twice before switching into it.
Negatives
It's low base 50 HP holds back Rotom-Wash's ability to check metagame threats. With Rest and Pain Split being Rotom-Wash's only form to recover lost HP, it makes it unreliable on the long run.
With the removal of Hidden Power, Rotom-Wash has no way to hurt special attacking Dragon type Pokemon like Lati@s, Hydreigon, Kommo-o and Dragapult since these don't care for burns.
Grass types like Rillaboom and Kartana will absolutely obliterate Rotom-Wash exploiting its only weakness to Grass.
Hydro Pump's imperfect accuracy forces Rotom-Wash to rely on a strong, albeit unreliable STAB.
Movesets
WHIRLPOOL
- Volt Switch
- Hydro Pump
- Pain Split / Defog
- Will-O-Wisp
Item Attached: Leftovers / Sitrus Berry
Ability: Levitate
EVs and Nature:
252 HP / 40 Def / 216 Spe
Timid Nature
Volt-Switch allows Rotom-Wash to switch out from unfavorable match-ups and regain momentum for another Pokemon waiting to switch-in. Thanks to its Water typing and its STAB Hydro Pump, Ground Pokemon will have to think twice on switching into Volt-Switch. Will-o-Wisp allows Rotom-Wash to hinder Pokemon like Mamoswine, Tyranitar, Landorus-Therian, Melmetal and Scizor making them easier to check for its team. Finally, Pain Split is Rotom-Wash's only form of recovery and gives Rotom-W more utility against bulkier teams, though it can be easy to play around. Defog is an option in case your team cannot fit the move elsewhere and it makes Rotom-Wash a decent option to remove hazards thanks to its immunity to Spikes and Toxic Spikes. However, without Pain Split, Rotom-Wash will not be able to check Pokemon like Mamoswine and Scizor if it takes several repeated hits or chip damage.
Dynamax
While it is preferable for Rotom to support its team, Rotom-Wash biggest benefit when using Dynamax is the additional bulk it gains which can allow it to prevent a sweep against its team. Max Geyser allows it to increase the power of Hydro Pump and bypass its unreliable accuracy for three turns. Rotom doesn't gains anything from Max Lightning due to Levitate but it becomes a slightly stronger attack that doesn't forces Rotom-Wash to switch out. To sum it up, don't Dynamax this Rotom set unless you are on a tight spot where you need the extra bulk to turn the tables on the opponent.EVs & Items
216 Speed EVs allows Rotom-Wash to outspeed Gyarados, Togekiss and slower Mamoswine. Max HP is used to grant Rotom-Wash to increase its bulk as much as possible and the rest goes into Defense to buff up its physical tanking while exploiting Will-o-Wisp. Because Rotom-Wash lacks a reliable way to recover its HP, Leftovers is the best choice for this set. However, if Rotom-Wash is not using Pain Split, Sitrus Berry is an acceptable alternative.
Partners
Rotom-Wash appreciates partners that it can combine with to regain momentum while taking care of the Pokemon it struggles to check. Scizor fits the bill incredibly well, not only due to its Steel typing but access to U-turn allows it to check Pokemon like Lati@s. Rotom-Wash heavily appreciates Scizor's ability to pressure Grass types like Rillaboom and Amoonguss. Sweepers like Volcarona, Rillaboom and Kommo-o appreciates Rotom's ability to regain momentum and switch safely into them. Clefable in particular can also aid in setting up Stealth Rock, which helps Rotom-W even more by getting more chip damage on switch-ins alongside Volt Switch.
Other Options
Rotom-Wash can use a Substitute + Pain Split set not only to exploit switch-ins like Blissey and scouting its opponent's moves, but it also allows it to recover lost health and it has a good matchup against defensive teams. However, relying only on Hydro Pump and Thunderbolt is inadvisable since Rotom-Wash will not be able to hurt Dragon type Pokemon.
Nasty Plot is a good move that allows Rotom-Wash to increase its special attack, however, the lack of reliable coverage moves makes it hard to use in Singles.
Trick and Choice Scarf are also decent options on Rotom-Wash allowing it to hinder defensive switch-ins like Blissey and Toxapex while also providing Defog support, if needed. However, once its Scarf is tricked, Rotom-Wash becomes dead-weight.
Checks & Counters
Grass types like Kartana, Rillaboom and Tapu Bulu will obliterate Rotom-Wash. However, because these Pokemon are physical attackers, they can't switch recklessly into Rotom-Wash due to Will-o-Wisp. It should be worth mentioning that Zarude can heal its burn thanks to Jungle Healing which makes it an excellent switch into Rotom-Wash. Tangrowth on the other hand, doesn't minds the burn due to Regenator and being mostly a special attacker.
Strong special attackers that do not care for burns like Lati@s, Hydreigon, Kommo-o and Dragapult can easily set up in Rotom-Wash due to its inability to damage them and hit Rotom-Wash very strongly with their STAB moves.
